Optimizelegibility not working
(Not sure if I should post here or in dev subforum, sorry if I'm in the wrong place.) So, I just updated my device from 4.18 to the newest firmware out of curiosity and to get the Oxford dictionary hassle-free... but I had to give up my trusty text-rendering patch and instead move it to the config file, and I just can't. get it. to stick. To be clear, the right line is in there, in the correct section all right, and I am indeed looking at a kepub file - but no matter what typeface I choose, I can't see a single ligature in my book. What am I doing wrong?? Is there such a thing as a conflicting patch still? I tried editing the file with both Notepad++ and (in a moment of desperation) standard Windows Notepad, and I've power cycled the device...and my other config options are still displaying correctly. Am sad and almost want to go back to paper books for the weekend. Help :(

As far as I can tell, optimize legibility only enables kerning; I know of no way to enable ligatures in kepub files.

The old patch did, for typefaces that had old style kerning and ligatures enabled. I can't even tell if this setting enables one but not the other because it's such a jarring difference. But thank you for the answer, I'll experiment a little and revert back to the old fw if needed.

Optimize legibility should enable ligatures. I use ligatures in my kepubs and have for years.
I have switched to geometric precision as it keeps the ligatures and works better with spacing issues. Under [Reading], paste: webkitTextRendering=geometricPrecision And I just use Notepad in Windows 10. |

Aren't ligatures part of the font itself? Maybe you're using a font that doesn't support them, or at least for which WebKit can't enable them?

Possible, of course. I could have done something to many of the side loaded ones trying to optimise them, too. But the stock iteration of Amasis has ligatures too and even they are not showing up.

And just to make sure, in your .kobo folder, Kobo eReader.conf [Reading} section looks something like this? Code:

Patch log, sorry it's long, but I thought it would be more useful to be reminded of everything there is rather than just the things I have enabled, in case there really is a conflict somewhere.

@Ansl,
Something doesn't add up, here. I've attached a 1-page test kepub and 3 screenshots from my Libra2 using 3 different fonts. As you can see, all fonts display at least some ligatures. Looking at the Amasis image I see ligatures for 'fi' and 'fl' but ligatures for 'ff', 'ffi', 'ffl' are not obvious in the Kobo built-in version of Amasis. Rather than more aimless discussion please copy the attached kepub to your Kobo and compare what you see with Amasis (1st image) on your own device. Just copy the kepub using simple drag-drop with a USB connection. Don't use calibre or Dropbox or anything fancy as we don't want to introduce any unnecessary complications into what's happening. |

Using JackieW's kepub on my Kobo Libra 2 with webkitTextRendering=optimizelegibility, I find:
Ligatures: Amasis Caecilia Kobo Tsukushi Mincho Malabar No ligatures: Avenir Next Georgia Gil Sans Kobo UD Kakugo Kobo Nickel Open Dyslexic Rakutan Sans Rakutan Serif |
