Donations

First off, sorry if there's a better place to post this - I went through the subforums and they seemed unrelated or to explicitly exclude this topic.

I'm working on a thing at bre.ad for assisting donations to multiple open source projects. I'd like to get end-user software added to the platform first to bootstrap things, and if it takes off it would make it easier to donate to Calibre (ideally).

I'd be donating myself at the start for a while to make it worth the effort of setting it up. Otherwise, if you're at all curious I'd be interested in hearing feedback too.

Sorry again if this isn't the right place!

I have been working full time on calibre for over a decade supported by donations. So calibre has a pretty stable donation stream already. There isnt much incentive to add calibre to another donations platform. Maybe talk a bit more about the platform and how its supposed to work and why I might be interested in joining it.

Oh yeah, I didn't mean to imply your current funding had issues. And thanks for hearing me out!

So I think the main draw is there's probably a portion of users who want to donate but:
  • Use Linux, and want to donate to 20-30 projects. $5 * 20 = $100/mo, which is a fairly high hurdle, may do nothing due to analysis paralysis.
  • Want to donate, but use Calibre irregularly and lightly and are hesitant to donate $5/mo for that (or feel bad about the transaction fee on a smaller donation).

Bre.ad basically allows people to split donations between multiple projects, so they can effectively donate a smaller amount, and splits the transaction fee so the donation goes further.

There's one other feature - Bre.ad has an optional mechanism for distributing a portion of received donations to other projects (like dependencies). This may also be a selling point (so to speak) for some potential donors - that donating to a project supports the entire ecosystem, making them feel like their donations are more effective.

And what would be involved in adding calibre to the platform? And how would payments work? Maybe we can continue this conversation by email, my email address is at the top of most calibre source code files.
