Kobo Mini suddenly unresponsive

I purchased a second hand Kobo Mini two weeks ago and it's been working like a dream! Until this morning, when I went to turn it on and it did not respond at all. I've done the soft reset (slide and hold power button for 15 seconds) and nothing happened. I've also plugged it in to charge on both my laptop USB ports as well as into the wall, and I've left it charging for about an hour now. The orange charging LED light doesn't come on at all, and it still won't turn on.

Any ideas of what I can try next?

Thanks in advance!

I wonder if your battery failed. The motherboard could have failed as well, but considering it was working recently, then stopped, the battery failing first is a good place to start. But it means buying a battery to see if that’s the problem, when maybe something else is wrong.

Have you popped off the back and put a paperclip in the pinhole? Just work a credit card or stiff fingernail around the edge to free the back from the Kobo Mini. Then press the reset button in the pinhole with the paperclip. Push until you feel a gentle click. This is called a manual reset, and it restores your Kobo back to its factory installation. Your books and settings won’t survive the reset. If your Kobo mini is a goner, pressing the reset button won’t have any affect, unfortunately.

Hi Cootey! Thanks for the advice, I did pop the back off to give the pinhole a poke. Unfortunately the kobo didn't react at all so I fear it perhaps is a goner. I'm not sure that I have the technical know how to sort out a battery or motherboard problem so maybe it is time to accept the death of the little kobo.

What a shame. You just got it, too, didn't you? Well, it *is* about eight years old. Changing the battery sounds simple to some. Just pop off the back, unscrew the white plate, reveal the battery, and pry that sucker off without rupturing it. It's glued on tight! The problem is that although the replacement batteries aren't too expensive, you have no guarantee replacing the battery will fix the problem, and you're over half way to the cost of buying another Mini off eBay.

Buying another Mini would be a better solution for you than replacing the battery, but I'd recommend investing a little more into getting the Clara HD. It's not much larger, it's got more storage capacity, a faster processor, a better eInk screen, and that sweet backlight with a color shift for late night reading.

I would buy an updated Mini if Kobo ever made one. But I second the recommendation for the Clara. It's a sweet ereader!

You've only had it for a couple of weeks? Did you ever manage to charge it sucessfully? That is to say, are you sure the cable is right? Kobos are so picky about cables.
