Android tablet installation and display rotation

Wow. I really like this app and would prefer to use it on my tablet but the whole screen rotation thing is becoming a deal breaker.

I've read lots of posts about this, but there doesn't seem to be anything definitive ("do this and the problem is solved"). Locking the tablet rotation as portrait has absolutely no effect on Koreader. I have not found a third party rotation control app that can address Koreader's intransigence.

File manager starts in landscape (like my boot animation). I can get the file manager into portrait but only by a non-reproducible series of guesses with the various rotation options (they do not correspond to what actually happens when selected).

Then I open the book and yet another frantic "let's try this (again)" takes place until I finally have the book in portrait (with the device right-side-up...). Setting this achievement as the "default" has no effect.

Seriously, is there nothing that can be done to simply tell the app to do EVERYTHING in portrait? Some mysterious configuration file that can be altered? (I have root).

Please tell me someone using a standard tablet has figured this out

do this and the problem is solved

On the File Manager:

1. Go to Settings -> Screen -> Rotation and check "keep current rotation across views"
2. In order to prevent "magic stuff" make sure you exit the program in Hamburguer -> Exit just after that.
3. Open the program again, go to Settings -> Screen -> Rotation and select your preferred rotation.
4. In order to prevent "magic stuff" make sure you exit the program in Hamburguer -> Exit just after that.

As you can see it could be a single step "check keep rotation across views and select rotation". But then, again, would make the problem trivial, so please follow all four steps in the given order

Extra hints: the 90º steps you see have a nice arrow that tell you how you'll need to move your device to adapt to the new screen rota.

Have fun!

Thanks for your response. I have executed the four steps as described above. No matter what I do the file manager insists on opening in landscape every time. A book will, of course, follow suit since the "keep current rotation across views" is checked.

I'm not having fun yet

You're welcome.

That can be caused by two reasons. Either your device is not android compliant or, most probably, magic stuff happened because you didn't follow the steps or missunderstand what non 0º rotation means.

Make sure you repeat the 4 steps above and, when you're at step 3, make sure you select some rotation other than 0º.

Then, after step 4, just make sure that both the check and the selected non0º rotation are checked.

If you do it again with the same results you can repeat a 3rd time and while you're at it grab a video with scrcpy and paste it somewhere online.

I'm doing this android thingy maintenance for a few years and I've hear a lot of weird feedback but I'm fairly confident you'll get the results you want with the steps above. Or, at least, you'll get us a nice video of an rara avis

Rara avis indeed. Something along the lines of the Dodo.

Alas, no amount of repeating the directions (over on XDA I'm known for my painfully explicit and detailed directions, so...) gave me any joy. Quite the contrary.

I was hoping for at least entertainment value in all this but was disappointed to find that scrcpy did not care for my tablet (running CM 13, so perhaps the drivers, etc., are not exactly the "expected" ones). I thought about using my daily-driver tablet camera to film the extravaganza but decided not to go there. So no questionable videos of the app performing somersaults while it fights it out with the OS.

On that note, I found that my daily-driver tablet (which boots in portrait) has no problem with the app. A happy discovery there.

Better still, I have found an acceptable solution for the problematic device. I tried a variety of apps designed for specific rotation control. The most effective of these use Accessibility settings. The one that worked best for me is Ultimate Rotation Control. Set globally to "Forced autorotate" with a custom setting for Koreader as "portrait" (and..."landscape" for Kodi...), the behavior exactly mimics that on my other tablet. With a global setting of just "autorotate" there is some indecision and brief tumbling when the app starts, although it does straighten up and fly right in the end.

So, all's well that ends well (I guess).
