Epub suddenly not working

Hello, I was adding epubs today and suddenly couldn't open them. It's as if every file is corrupted even though there is nothing different in the way I get the epubs or how I add them. I've been searching for the errors quite a lot but nothing seems to work, would be thankful for some help.

This is the first time I'm adding something in five days. Another thing to mention would be that books that I have been able to open and read before, has stopped opening and showing the same error message as well. I've tried to update to a newer version + older one I knew worked but alas, nothing. However, converting them to mobi and then opening them seem to work mostly but this is not what I want (or am used to), I like the ease of use and the way I can just click and it opens up.

Here's the error message:

common culprits are Security software blocking the worker. (Defender does not usually have this problem with Calibre)
Can you use the E-book viewer from the start menu to open the book?

I saw someone write about that so I've added calibre as part of an exclusion in Win11 but that didn't help.

It's the e-book viewer that I can't open, I always read with that so it's my go-to reader. Now it opens some books but not others, so I don't find any rhyme or reason to it. Tried a new ebook now and it worked. Tried adding another one and nope but to be clear mostly doesn't open at all and gives error message above.

It literally just forced a restart of the computer. Again. This is like the third time. Get blue screen and "The device ran into a problem and need to restart". Happens whenever I try to open up a book, randomly out of nowhere once in a while. Have a brand new computer and everything is in order so I'm wondering what I need to do differently..

If you right-click on the Start button and go to Event Viewer, is there anything in there around the time of the troubles?

First time opening up event viewer so bear with me but the source for the unexpected restarting is kernel-power it says. Then there's a log of LSA and DistributedCOM warnings that turn to errors. Security-SPP warnings and a ton of other stuff as well...Is there anything else I should look at?

Still having huge issues with opening up books though. Deleted everything and started from scratch. First 3 books was ok and then got the error message again.

Thanks for the response @gbm, just did this like 5 minutes ago and same result. First 3 books worked, and then I start to get the same error message as well. Funny thing is that I added identical epubs and it works on one and not on the other.

Don't know if this is related or even relevant but calibre on my new computer use up more CPU than usual. I'm just mentioning everything at this point.

The kernel-power thing is probably the result of the failure and not the cause. I think the LSA and DstributedCOM things are common in Windows 11 22H2. In Event Viewer, if you go to Custom View > Administrative Events, you can usually see a chronological listing of the things happening. If you go back to just before the time the kernel-power error showed up, that might indicate something.

Another thing to try is to open Task Manager before doing whatever's causing the problem and just keep doing whatever your doing until it breaks again. See if anything is weird is in Task Manager.

And, just because this sort of sounds a bit similar to some issues I've had, do you have an AMD graphics card? Could you download and run HWINFO > Save Report > Summary for Clipboard and paste that here?

https://www.hwinfo.com/download/

Make sure you're not clicking on the LANSweeper link. You'll want the link just below it.

Just before the kernel error showed up it has two different types of errors. "application hang" about 15 minutes before and then "volmgr" just the second it restarted.

The CPU is jumping up and down. Just "opening up" one book (doesn't open but you get what I mean) it jumps anywhere between 10-20% and then when I opened up a lot of them at the same time it jumped to 80% and it automatically restarted.
**correction, I looked at it again and when opening one book it acutally goes up to 65% as the highest.

I have a NVIDIA graphics card and apparently AMD ryzen CPU. Here's the summary:

Computer: ASUS
CPU: AMD Ryzen 9 7950X (Raphael, RPL-B2)
4500 MHz (45.00x100.0) @ 5390 MHz (54.00x99.8)
Motherboard: ASUS ROG STRIX X670E-F GAMING WIFI
BIOS: 0512, 08/19/2022
Chipset: AMD X670E (Promontory PROM21L.1)
Memory: 65536 MBytes @ 2400 MHz, 40-40-40-77
- 32768 MB PC41600 DDR5 SDRAM - Corsair CMK64GX5M2B5200Z40
- 32768 MB PC41600 DDR5 SDRAM - Corsair CMK64GX5M2B5200Z40
Graphics: ASUS TUF RTX 3060 GAMING V2 LHR
NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060, 12288 MB GDDR6 SDRAM
Drive: Samsung SSD 980 PRO 1TB, 976.8 GB, NVMe
Sound: NVIDIA GA106 - High Definition Audio Controller
Network: MediaTek Wi-Fi 6E MT7922 (RZ616) 160MHz Wireless LAN Card
Network: Intel Ethernet Controller I225-V
OS: Microsoft Windows 11 Professional (x64) Build 22621.963

Sidenote: I've been on this for so many hours which is besides the point but the truly weird thing is that it sometimes opens them up and then sometimes don't. I can be able to read all of them and then the next instant all I have is error messages. The view options worked for a while with selecting specific format, and then it didn't.

Unfortunately, I don't have an answer for you. Your issue has a lot of similarities to what I was having (editor apparently not opening but using 10% of the CPU and also viewer taking a long time to open (both sporadically and randomly)). But, in my case, reverting my AMD graphics driver to a much earlier version fixed it (and that's weird because it was my AMD 5600X CPU that was ramping up).

Just grasping at straws here, but I've heard that some games used to have issues with too many CPU cores. AMD built a Game Mode into Ryzen Master to disable some of those cores so games would play better. You could try that out, but I've also read about people with Windows 11 not being able to install Ryzen Master. I'll put the link in here anyway if you want to give it a try:

https://www.amd.com/en/technologies/ryzen-master

The download link is near the bottom of that page.

Another wild guess might be to set core affinities for Calibre. But, besides knowing those words, I'm clueless about how to do it.

Sorry. Hopefully, someone else can give you some pointers.

Also, that's a nice looking system you've got there.

Some other, general things that might be worth trying:

- Motherboard: ASUS ROG STRIX X670E-F GAMING WIFI
BIOS: 0512, 08/19/2022:

If I've got the link right, it looks like Asus has had several new BIOS versions since yours. You might consider updating to their latest (make sure this is the right board):

https://rog.asus.com/motherboards/ro...helpdesk_bios/

- Chipset: AMD X670E (Promontory PROM21L.1):

That report doesn't list the version of your chipset software. But, I'll assume that if you haven't updated your BIOS, you probably haven't updated your chipset drivers. If so, you might check if you have the latest and install it if not (again, make sure it's the right link):

https://www.amd.com/en/support/chips...cket-am5/x670e

- Graphics: ASUS TUF RTX 3060 GAMING V2 LHR
NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060, 12288 MB GDDR6 SDRAM

And, of course, update your video drivers. I'd stay away from the OEM's (Asus') drivers and get them directly from either Nvidia's site or via their GeForce Experience software.

And, right-clicking on your Start button and selecting Device Manager, does everything look good there? No exclamation marks on anything?

Unhappy still doesn't work I'm afraid

Tysm for your help and suggestions! Gonna look into it and see if there's anything that can help me along but it feels like it shouldn't be that complicated. Regarding the CPU, it's just super weird to me that it takes up more CPU than the heavy duty PS and blender projects that I have going on. All in all really bums me out that I can't use it like I used to cause it's probably my most used program for the last 10 years so really hope that this will be solved. If I convert to mobi and then open up it works but I can't just double click anymore or use epub at all.

Thanks, can't take credit for that I'm afraid someone else chose all the parts and assembled it and I'm just happy using it. Haven't had any issues (apart from this) so far so that's great.

I don't know about the other stuff you've linked and have to look into it but the device manager doesn't show any exclamation marks at least.
