Open with - Modern UI apps not offered

This is on Windows 11, calibre 6.11 (but problem has existed on all earlier versions)

When I right-click a file (here for example EPUB) in Windows Explorer and choose "Open with" it will offer me all available programs, including both traditional programs and also Modern UI apps (or whatever they are called now, I mean apps installed from Microsoft Store, including, for example, Freda).

But if I use the calibre built-in function to "open with", those modern UI apps are not offered. Is this specific to my installation or a bug or just a limitation?

I have found ways to open those apps from the command line, but not to pass a file to them. Therefore, even the "Open with"-plugin does not help.

If I make the app the standard application for a format, I can click on "View" in calibre and it will open in the app without any problem.

It is a windows limitation by design.

Modern UI apps are not proper desktop windows programs but part of the failed attempt to merge mobile and desktop. They are crazy. Best uninstalled, hidden or whatever. Many are googlesk in online connections and abuse of privacy.
Even the concept of the name is arrogant.

The Modern moniker for such apps is Universal Windows Platform, UWP for short. They started out as Metro apps - some said because they used a lot of bandwidth

In it's early incarnations Edge needed a shim ==>> https://github.com/MicrosoftEdge/edge-launcher. I used it with calibre's Open With until MS killed off Edge's ePUB reader feature

Interestingly the current incarnation of Edge does appear in the calibre's offer list for PDF's, and the offer list for (x)html files in the editor.
