My K3 Keyboard gone mad

I have very strange behaviour on my (up to now) trusty K3:
- Any action on the Page Forward buttons brings up the search bar, with a random search text, 6h7v for example, and further presses on those buttons add the same text to the search string.
- Home key brings the search bar with a different string.
- Page Back brings up the character size, Typeface, Screen Rotation window.

I have tried to stop and restart the Kindle, tried to reboot it, even tried to run Kubrick on it; no change.

Any idea ? Or should I just sadly take it apart, and store screen and battery for future use ? (There are four K3 in use in this house ;-3)

Thank you for the idea.

I opened the back of the K3 (as luck would have it I had cut my thumb-nails last Sunday), thinking I would wash the rubber keyboard; but before going further I tried to start it to see.

Surprise, the problem has disappeared !

So I looked at all the 6 silver screws and the 11 black ones, and found one silver and three black not tight; so tightened them up, fitted the back back, and it now works without problem.

Only remains to serially update the software to 3.4.3, and reinstall the screen-saver hack.

rolgiati, have you ever replaced a K3 battery? I still love my K3 but the battery is going and I may tackle trying to replace it.

Easy to do once you have opened the case (I use my thumb-nails as the main case-opening tools) just the two silver-coloured screws I marked with red arrows on the shamelessly stolen picture hold the battery.

Those marked with red and yellow circles are those to remove to change the screen.

Glad you got it working. Sometimes you need to do a hard reset (directions if you search google) but this wipes out all your books and settings. It is usually a last resort if all else fails. The easiest way to restore is to copy the books folders and files over to your computer then copy them back. Beats redownloading.

As the Kindle was still running, however badly, I USB plugged it to my desktop machine, and downloaded all the Documents directory.

Then, in rank of increasing severity, I:
- Completely stopped and restarted it
- Rebooted it
- Reset it to Factory Defaults
- Ran Ubrick.
After the last two I loaded a couple books for testing, but none of those manipulations had worked.

So as a last resort I opened it, with the result you know, and after tightening a few screws I was left with reinstalling jailbreak, screensavers, and the contents of the Documents dir. ;-3)

Congrats with the fix! I am receiving my “new” K3 White today, which has already depleted battery. I’ll let you know how how the new battery goes

There are plenty sources, mainly from China, on ebay.com.

Prices around US$ 15 including P&P.

Similar prices (in £) on ebay.co.uk.

It says it was manufactured in October 2022!

With NiLuJe's Battery Status in KUAL, I can see it is at 1713 mAh. Nominal capacity is around 1750 mAh. So this is a brand new battery, holds the charge well so far.
