Converting PDF completely breaks layout.

I have this PDF that I want to convert using DeDRM so that I can highlight/copy text for note taking purposes. The trouble is, converting (with default settings) creates this mangled output where it's just a big white pdf with all the images split in to this long meaningless list.

I've used Calibre before to do just this, and it worked fine after some pokering, but I can't really remember what I did now.

This happens with or without DeDRM enabled. I don't really know how to begin to make this work.

Are you converting from PDF to PDF?

If so why not just use the original PDF with DRM removed?
