Exclamation Must have Nickel add-ons?

Since i am new to kobo i installed Nickel yesterday and i see that there is a lot of stuff you can addd, the problem is that i dont know where to get those "mods" is there a site to get them?

And what are the most important and useful add-ons i should have? i already have dark mode, and nickeclock so i can see the house while i am reading...

Installed Nickel? Nickel is the default operating system for Kobo. You don't install it.

I'd say if you just got your Kobo, maybe give it a few weeks before installing NickleMenu, patches, etc. You don't yet know what you are even changing.

There are some things about NickelMenu that are quite good and very useful. One of them is the ability to plugin the Kobo once, side load eBooks from Calibre, eject, and reconnect via USB without having to unplug/replug the USB cable.

Code:
menu_item : main : USB : nickel_misc : force_usb_connection

There are a lot of cool add-ons and mods, but for absolute must-haves, I'd say my top three are:
  1. NickelMenu: The gateway to enabling other mods and add-ons.
  2. NickelSeries: If you sideload books but don't use Calibre to transfer over books, this is invaluable as it will properly populate the Series field in the UI. Useful even if you do use Calibre as you can hold off on that second reconnect if you're in a rush, or is useful if you download books via the official Dropbox functionality.
  3. Better Hyphenation: The stock hyphenation dictionary is sub-optimal. These dictionaries have more rules and saner default options.

And if you like to tinker with the UI or want to enable some hidden features, honourable mention to kobopatch.

Edit: And if you're looking for a good, free alternative or supplement to the built-in reading dictionaries, these dictionaries based on Wiktionary data come pre-made in Kobo format and are updated twice a month & generated nightly (save the dicthtml.zip files to the .kobo/custom-dict folder).

Oh, if you use Dropbox and have a Kobo that doesn’t use it out of the box, I wouldn’t wait. Just add it - it makes all the difference to usability. Especially if your local library uses BorrowBox or something instead of Overdrive.

Do all (currently sold) Kobo models now offer Dropbox?

I never use it myself, but when I upgraded my Clara to 4.33, I saw there is a Dropbox folder on it, so I'm assuming they do?

Oh, maybe? My Clara didn’t when I bought it, which wasn’t very long ago. And my older ones (Glo and Mini) didn’t so I added it to them. I’ll have a look and see if it has appeared on my Clara.

My Libra 2 doesn't seem to have DropBox on 4.33, unless I'm looking in the wrong place.

To be clear, I don't know that Clara has it either. I've never used it out tried to, so I wouldn't know how to even check. I just saw a Dropbox folder and assumed.

Should note that if you're doing this for series metadata purposes you can install NickSeries instead https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sh...d.php?t=331680. This hooks the Nickel import process to also include series and Calibre caption info, removing the need for a second connection.

You can get Dropbox on the Kobo Libra 2 & Clara (link).

Add the below line verbatim to the Kobo eReader.conf file.

Code:
dropbox_link_account_poll=
https://authorize.kobo.com/{region}/{language}/LinkDropbox
Then add the NickelMenu Dropbox shortcut with:

Code:
menu_item : main : Dropbox : nickel_open:library: dropbox
Once you click on the NickelMenu Dropbox shortcut, it will take you to a page to authorize your access and you're sorted.
