Why Jailbreak?

I have a Kindle PW 11th generation. What are the benefits of jailbreaking?

Well except for some of the most advanced users, it's mainly symbolic and to gain control of your own device.

For me the big and great benefit of jailbreaking is the usability of KOReader on my PW 5 and Oasis 3. Jailbreak & KOReader made my Oasis 3 to my favourite reader out of all my devices.

For me on pw5 to use koreader

- KoReader (better reading experience, more supported file formats, more customization)

- being able to install apps (drawing app for quick sketches, notepad app for notes, etc etc etc.. there are a lot of cool and helpful apps, Audio Player, Screensavers, File Explorer, Games, Terminal App kterm)

- being able to block auto updates to gain full control over your device so amazon can't do stuff you don't like

- being able to write / code your own software (python & shell scripts) for the kindle you then can run in KUAL to enhance the abilitys of the kindle self

short? it just gives you full control over your kindle so you can (for the most part) do what you want with the kindle without amazon saying "nah". it's like administrator account on a computer.. it just helps you to do what you want to do. but this only makes sense, if you really want to do anything already. if all you want to do is read books, you don't "need" it. it helps since KoReader is better for reading, but other than that.. you don't "need" a jailbreak.


Example:

I use my Kindle after waking up to write down my dream diary in the notepad app. sometimes when i want to show someone quick something by drawing something, i use the drawing app and even can make screenshots to import it later on my laptop. if i have read a book, i can delete the bookfile and empty folder+sdr with the File Explorer app. and if i want to shut down my kindle completly (not just standby mode), i can use a KUAL extension i have written myself which shutdowns my kindle completly. and when i'm bored, i can play text adventure games in gargoyle which supports many old text adventure file formats. and if i want, i can even read epubs in KoReader and modify a lot of things i can't in the normal reader app of kindles. i even can listen to mp3 files over bluetooth headphones if i want to.

it's really nice to be able to have full control over your own device and to do stuff you never would be able to without a jailbreak.

There are few reasons for why I do it.

The number one reason for me is to have the cover of the book I'm now reading as the screen saver.

I prefer collection management to calibre. Only possible with a jailbroken Kindle.

I jailbroke my Kindle and installed SyncThing so that I could upload books to it simply by dragging them into a folder on my desktop or laptop.

It's a sleep screen, not a screen saver, and you don't see it with a sleep cover. I did add this to the DXG and it makes it much slower to wake. Later firmwares do it. It was the only thing I kept of patches on the DXG as it has no sleep cover. Didn't see any point to other patches.

Yes. However does it have search by series possible? I can't see such a thing on any of my 4 different Kindles.

Um, that works on Windows or Linux without a jailbreak, but drag and drop of more than a few items is perilous. I use Calibre, which works with all Kindles?

Or does that use WiFi? I never enable WiFi on my Kobos or Kindles, only on the Likebook Mars so as to use the library via Borrowbox, but they have updated something and it needs a new PIN.

But the better solution is a Kobo. I have 4 different Kindle models.

A couple of months ago, I got a used KO2 with a jailbreak-amenable version. I was curious, and installed it and also KOReader. Looking over the list of available packages, that was pretty much the only thing I had any interest in (having installed it on my PocketBook Era).

KOReader has not caught on with me, and I will probably just undo the jailbreak altogether. But one KOReader feature I'd like to have: ability to connect to calibre server and download either azw3 or kfx from there (except that KOReader's client doesn't let me pick kfx).

I didn't see any see any standalone client for this, is there one?

Why undo the jailbreak?

Does KOReader open or even show azw3 files? I didn't think it does either.

I am not aware of any non-amazon reader that can open KFX.

Why would you want to download KF8 with KOReader when it's main and best format is ePub? Can KOReader even handle KF8?
