Question Can Calibre backup the kobo database?

I am concerned if I loose my ereader or if it breaks highlights, how far I am through I am on books etc will be lost.

Is there anyway each time I connect to calibre it can copy the kobo database somewhere? Will it include all the highlights, reading positions in book , bookmarks etc?

Yes you can do this using the Kobo Utilities plugin.

Thank you so much that has sorted me out!

How is best to backup the calibre library itself? Should I store it on a Google drive share?

Given that Google Drive does not get along with the bracketed numbers in calibre's directory names, I would suggest compressing your library into a archive file (Zip, 7z, RAR, whatever) and backing that up to Google Drive.

Use Calibre's own export which ensures files are not too big.

Buy a microSD card of at least 256GB with an SD adapter and use that to backup your Calibre libraries and settings. You could even get 2 of them for multiple backups.

Is there anyway to automate the backup export process to a usb / SD card ? For example every time I open calibre it does a backup?

if you run Windows, you are best to use FreeFileSync to do the backups as that way you won't have to copy any of the files that have not changed since the first backup. You would have to do it manually. But that's no bad thing.

Kobo Utilities lets you specify where the backups go.
Even per device. (I have a Aura and a Libre folders configured)
If the place is available (In case you forgot to inset a removable drive), then it gets done as per that and other settings (there are more).

IMHO a great place to store them is a folder that gets synced (one way. ) using Free file sync or other product.

FreeFileSync is also available for Linux and MacOS.

And it's one of many such tools ==>> Comparison of file synchronization software
