[Kobo] firmware issue

I suddenly got this error message using Calibre version 3.48 on my new Libra 2 when I installed the latest firmware 4.33.19608

Noticing many reports on mobileread that this version was buggy, I downgraded to 4.31.19086 and it all works fine.

It's all working well and there's nothing extra in 4.33.19608 that I need so why upgrade?

I should add though that if I hadn't changed to Apple, I'd still be on Windows 7, and will not now upgrade my Kobo firmware ever, or until I'm forced to, so I may not be your typical customer

Just a quick note. 4.33.19608 is no longer the latest firmware. 4.33.19759 was released yesterday. Given that you have a Libra 2, it is suggested you install the new firmware because it has fixes for the Libra 2.

Thank you.
I'm not (yet) aware of anything that needs fixing, and if the upgrade is likely to give me the Calibre error that this thread is about, I may be better staying where I am.
If I had problems with the Libra 2, that would be another matter.
I don't do much to upset the Libra really, just read a few side loaded books.

It's not an error. It's just a precaution in case Kobo clanged something in the database. But with the current firmware, it's OK to say yes as it is supported. Here is what was said about the new firmware.

The changes that I know of in the firmware are:
  • 'Add more dictionaries' option included in language dropdown. Selecting this open the "Manage Dictionaries" popup and the installed dictionaries can be changed.
  • Use pinch gesture to change font size when reading
    • Displays circle with some text in new font size.
    • Only on devices with capacitive touchscreen.
  • Turning pages in PDFs will now automatically maintain the current zoom level and position from the previous page.
  • Clock when reading has been moved to top left when the menu is displayed.
  • Fixes:
    • Audiobook progress syncing between devices
    • Updated handwriting timeout to reduce lag in Notebook
    • Aura SD: Removed two finger scroll gesture
    • Libra 2 stability improvements

If I think of anything else, I will add it later.

While the firmware version didn't change to 4.34.x, the internal database version did change. This will require bumping the supported database version in the driver. I have checked in this change and it should be in the next calibre release. Until then, it is safe to use the "Attempt to support newer firmware" option on the driver.

Thank you Jon
I was happily reading along on my Libra 2 minding my own business and feeling confident when with no warning the little devil restarted itself, including losing where I was up to in the book. I wasn't even turning a page, just reading one.
So my Libra 2 has now started playing up!

So with that reassurance from you, I'll install the latest firmware which hopefully includes a stability fix for it ???, patch it, set the flag for Calibre to carry on regardless and see how I get on.

He has (or had) 4.31 installed and we know how buggy that firmware is.

Nevertheless it is impolite to jump into another users thread, especially one that is addressing issues other than yours -- in this instance calibre install problems.
