Cover created by Calibre 6 when Epub doesn't have one not correct
I have an ebook (Epub) that imported all right in Calibre 5. I tried to import it in Calibre 6, and it imported OK, apart from the cover. Calibre 6 generated image file cover.jpg, and placed that in the folder with the Epub. However, the image didn't show the content of the image, but a file name.
I've checked this Epub with Sigil, and it does have a cover, one of the images in the Epub actually serves as cover, but it isn't marked as such in the Epub. That's probably why Calibre generates a new one. Calibre 5 seems to pick the correct image, and shows it correctly, but Calibre 6 just shows the name of the image. In fact, the file name is correct, so if it would display the content of the image, instead of the name of the image, Calibre would show the right cover. |

If the cover is not properly marked (semantics for both the file and the image used), it is a guess. OTOH PDF uses just uses the first page.
If you use the ebook editor (T), right click the image:use as cover Do the same for the HTML file that uses that image: Now, when you go to the Metadata Editor screen. Select the EPUB format and click the blue-blank cover button to the left, and that will bring that currently marked cover into the Library. |

That does work, but that's always been true, and Calibre 5 showed the cover correctly. And actually, the file that's been picked as cover is correct, but Calibre 6 doesn't show it correctly.

I've been looking at the code at Github, and I've noticed commit ba8f4fb (6 days ago, so the 18th I guess) that's described like so:
Fix a regression in 6.0 that broke rendering of first page of EPUB as cover when the EPUB has no actual cover That sounds uncannily like the bug that I've noticed with 6.0, and 6.1, so it may have been fixed already, and could well be available in 6.2. Actually, I've installed the source, and when I run that, it seems to work all right again. |
