Question Protecting Forma screen with lightest solution?

Hey all!

The screen protector film that came with my Forma is finally peeling off.

I'm concerned to avoid scratching the screen. Sometimes I do put my tablets ontop of each other, because of limited space in my room. I've noticed the film itself is pretty marked.

I was going to just buy another fllm, but with postage, prices are a ridiculous for such a simple thing.

So I'm looking at some kind of cover, BUT:
- I don't want to add much weight to my Forma. It's low weight is KEY for me.
So therefore:
- I need something I can easily just slip it into (a 'slip case'...'book sleeve'?)
OR
- a cover that stays on it but is SUPER LIGHT.

(By cover I include one of those tempered glass covers just for the screen).

I admit a sleep cover might be nice, because I do hate that power button lol.
But weight is still most important.

Any reccos folks?

The film isn’t meant to be permanent, which is why it peeled on its own.

The screen itself is actually more durable than that film.

I’d advise against another film or one of those glass covers as they will obscure the text, no it doesn’t matter how clear they are it’s an additional layer and it will interfere. Additionally with the way the Forma is designed any additional films will add a lip that will be very easy to catch on things and thus pull up ruining the point of said film.

The Forma sleep cover from Kobo is decent enough. Obviously it adds much more weight than a film or screen but it’s not got the downsides of those things. And is probably a bit more protective.

There are a ton of third party cases people here swear by, for my taste these are inferior to the official case in various ways. But they are definitely cheaper.

If weight is the primary consideration, then a sleeve is probably the way to go. That will be light when reading but protected when put into the bag.

As to covers, until the Sage, I haven't seen a cover that is easy to remove the device from. They all take a bit of pressure to remove and add. I don't do it lightly.

As to screen protectors, I've never looked at them. The one that is coming off for you is intended to be removed when you set the device up. Didn't it have a tab in one corner to do this? None of my devices have taken any damage. I do have devices that other family members have damage. But, I don't think a screen protector would have saved them.

Thanks for your advice so far!

(Yes, I just left the film on there for a bit of extra protection)

Actually for now I'm planning to put it in a simple sleeve that you use to put papers in binders!

In searching for sleeves, I came across this little collection. (Someone on here also mentioned Esty). I'd be interested in your thoughts/insights/warnings...

Initially I'm drawn to the one that you put the Forma into horizontally, since it seems easier. The other one has huge good reviews tho...

I definitely don't want with a flap - it needs to be a one-move job!

"until the battery went?" Are you saying your Kobo Forma's battery went dead? Isn't the Kobo Forma a fairly new model? I have a Kobo Glo HD that's still going strong.

On topic, OP, a sleeve would be my recommendation as well. It would protect your Forma when not being used.

The Forma was release 3.5 years ago. With the way Li-Ion batteries work, a dead battery now is a definite possibility. It is all about how it was used and treated.

Yeah I loved the Forma and would have bought another one except for the age and knowing that the batteries were going to have a shorter lifespan from the start. The Sage has been great so far.

How can I ensure it lasts as long as possible?
I bought mine a few months ago.

Why 'from the start'? Are the batteries different to the Sage?

Re extending FORMA battery life:
I looked up how to extend life of a Li-On battery and here's my plain English summary.
I don't understand some of it, so other people's expertise v welcome!

1. Use partial-discharge cycles, instead of full charge or discharge

- Best to recharge when the device gets down to 70-80% full
- Don't let it discharge to 0%
- But also avoid charging to 100%

2. Especially avoid "Deep discharge".
I haven't managed to find a plain English description of what this means in practical terms. Open to someone explaining it!
I assume it might be about letting it discharge to 0%?

3. Don't charge at temp extremes, esp below 0 degrees celcius (freezing point)

4. Avoid high charge/discharge currents (Not sure what 'discharge currents' means)

Honestly, forget about it. The only real way to extend how long a Li-Ion battery lasts is not to use it. Charge it to about 40% and store in a cool dry place.

All except one of those are common suggestions. The one that is not is

Quote:
Best to recharge when the device gets down to 70-80% full
That isn't normal and I didn't see it on the page linked. In fat the recommendation is usually not to charge above about 80%. The recommendation is to keep the charge level close to the middle. So, between about 30% an 70%. Or 20% and 80% depending on who is talking. This is so common, that there are laptops that have an option to stop charging when they get to 80%.

My opinion after using a lot of different Li-Ion battery powered devices, and a lot of research is that it just isn't worth it. Anything you do means a lot of work, basically means you don't use the battery and doesn't have a big enough effect to make it worth it. Just use the device. Charge it when you can. Run the battery down if you can't charge it and want to read.
