Dying (end of life) battery behavior on Oasis
I have an Oasis 9th Gen, current shape but without the warm light.
It is a little over 4 years old now. I got it October 2017. I am curious what kind of behavior people have seen as the battery starts to run into it's end of life. My battery life had gotten dramatically worse. But this has all happened since the 5.14.x firmware updates have occurred. I am curious.. should I be expecting to see a long very gradual loss of battery life or do they tend to go pretty quickly? I'm trying to decide whether it's time to trade/replace it I guess. If it's just software and might get fixed I'll wait, but it is getting annoying. I'd guess if I was to read continuously at this point it might only last maybe 4 hours? (In airplane mode) |

Have you tried a restart since the 5.14.x firmware? It couldn't hurt.

I am not sure about the Oasis in particular but Li-ion/Po batteries tend to lose capacity rather quickly once it falls below 80%. After coming across so many reports of lower than expected battery life in Oasis models I am glad I went with a refurb PW3 instead of Oasis even though there wasn't much of a price difference. Sourcing a decent replacement battery seems to be near impossible.

I have done a restart, and a hard reset, and now I just did a manual install of the latest firmware.
I checked the battery logs by doing the dump logs trick and my battery is at 94 cycles. We'll see if it improves here, otherwise I'm still hemming and hawing on a regular Paper white vs the Signature Paper white to replace it. |

Gotta read more but we'll see.. I think reloading the firmware helped.
I only managed to drain it 9% yesterday after doing so, and I read a lot yesterday. The day before I'd drained it 50% in a similar amount of time before reloading the firmware. |

i faced identical issues with my old paperwhite. once the battery life went below 50%, it was fairly a downhill. I often found that the device just shut down even when there was 10% battery left. the newer generations are far better at battery performance, i believe.

Have you tried recalibrating the battery?
This was my experience with a first gen Oasis (which has a battery cover, so ignore that part): https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sh...82#post3866082 |

The problem is definitely fixed on mine now. Been reading 3-4 days and it's dropped all of 10-15%. (I've been reading a fair bit)
Minus someone actually hacking/disassembling the software I'm somewhat skeptical the battery calibration routines actually do anything, though maybe they do, reading the logs it does appear Amazon has tried to put some kinds of "trampoline" in the software to detect issues, and maybe one of these processes would kick the trampoline. I've had a ton of Kindles.. DX-G, 2 Paperwhites, Voyage, Oasis 1, and this Oasis 2. I've never ever had anything weird happen with battery issues until this Oasis 2. I was a serial upgrader till this one. I do want one with a warm front light but it's seemingly not enough to get me to upgrade. If/when whispersync is killed maybe that's going to kick me to upgrade. My Oasis 2 does have the 3G stuff. |

Glad it's solved. Sometimes it's just the firmware and they push out tiny updates which fix it. Sounds like the issue for yours.

An example of a relatively benign miscalibration I have experienced on my Oasis 2 is that once after charging the OS thought the charge was 105% (which got displayed as 100%). I think that situation is relatively common and led to lots of reports of devices staying at 100% for a significant time, then dropping faster. When the battery in such a device is allowed to discharge to a few percent then a calibration is done and it does not internally register over 100% until it again drifts out of calibration. This also explains some of the times that a battery doesn't charge past 98%. |

When the battery is completely dead can Kindles be still used while plugged in? Does this vary from one Kindle to the other? I am particularly concerned about the Kindle Paperwhite 3 (7th gen. ). Sourcing replacement batteries seems to be practically impossible in my case.
