Embedded Python Error on Windows 7
Does anyone know if Sigil works on Windows 7? Seems like it should work.
![]() But I install Sigil-1.9.2-Windows-Legacy-Setup.exe and I get the error "Embedded Python Error". ![]() |

We've already had several success stories of people using the 1.9.1/2 legacy version of Sigil on Windows 7.
Are you sure you don't have multiple versions of Sigil installed? I ask because Sigil Legacy installs to a different directory than regular Sigil by default (and also creates different shortcuts and Start Menu entries). Your particular error is the kind of error you would get when trying to launch one of the versions of Sigil installed by one of the installers that's incompatible with Windows 7. Make sure you're trying to launch the Sigil.exe that gets installed to a folder named Sigil-Legacy. Or that you're using the shortcut named Sigil-Legacy. I'm using Windows 7 Professional 64 bit in VMware Fusion. This is a brand new system that I just installed. Previously I did not install any versions of Sigil.
![]() I use the Sigil-Legacy desktop shortcut to launch. ![]() Error "Embedded Python Error" appears first. ![]() Then error "error in xmlprocessor repairXML: -2" appears. ![]() If I try to close the error windows, then from the tenth time the program starts, but does not respond. ![]() |

Those are very weird errors. Nothing in those files mentioned is different between Sigil Legacy and the normal installer. Only the bundled version of Python is changed.
I'll see if I can get virtual Windows 7 setup to test. I know for a fact that people are successfully using Legacy Sigil 1.9.2 on Windows 7, so something weird is happening. |

The area of sigil_bs4 that's failing is in a section of bs4 that is intended as a workaround to a Python bug that was fixed in 2013: https://github.com/Sigil-Ebook/Sigil...lparser.py#L74
I'm just not certain why it never caused problems on any official (non-legacy) versions of Sigil before 1.9.x on Windows 7. |

Wow! I'd forgotten entirely about that discussion/issue. Good catch. Seems like Sigil support on Windows 7 has been a bit of crapshoot for a while now. " I'm hoping that "new" installs of Windows 7 are going to be rare enough that this won't be a big issue. Most older Windows 7 installations have hopefully picked up the necessary hotfix along the way.
EDIT: it appears the original KB2533623 update was superseded by the Windows 7 KB3063858 Security Update which is still available from Microsoft. Last edited by DiapDealer; 04-26-2022 at 12:49 PM. |

For the experiment I reinstalled Sigil 1.9.2 on clean Windows 7 and tried KB3063858 update. It turned out that this update also fixes the problem with starting Sigil.
Security Update for Windows 7 (KB3063858) Security Update for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB3063858) I'm sorry I had to create another thread, but the thread "Sigil not fully launching - Embedded Python error" somehow didn't have an exact solution. Immediately we found out that the problem is definitely solved by update KB3063858. |

I'm not sure why that's relevant. The OP of this thread was using the correct installer for Win 7.
