Distraction free e-reader reading! Is it possible?
I have a very poor attention span and am easily distracted. This means when I am on my kindle I quite frequently switch to the amazon store and start mindlessly browsing e-book samples.
I recently lost my kindle and was thinking of buying a new e-book reader. It occurred to me that it would be great if I found an e-book reader that doesn't have an online store, and one which I have to go onto my desktop, or transfer e-books via a cable, to add a book onto it. Another important thing I would like is the ability to read an article online on my desktop and send it to my e-reader (I used to be able to do this via a kindle chrome addon and found it very useful) Anyone have any suggestions for a device that would fufill the above criteria? Thanks |

You can get a Kobo and use the patches to remove the store.

You could use Plato reader on a supported device. I think it's the perfect reader for being distraction-free. Koreader doesn't have a store, but there are so manly little options and tools and extensions that I would always get sucked in, and whenever I'd get back to reading I kept being distracted by every little thing that looks like a formatting error or issue. "Shouldn't the paragraphs be more flush with the page? Was that line supposed to be indented? Do I have to switch back to the book's embedded style to see these headers properly?"
I'm a lot worse than you but I find it pretty easy to forget all that using plato, and you can still exit Plato to once again access the store and everything. But it's discouraged because plato is so fast that I hate going back to that sluggish world. |

Just don't use the WiFi. Only need it once.

Easier said than done. It's not exactly hard to toggle on.
OP you might want to restrict your Kindle from going on WiFi at all. There's a high chance your router has features to restrict access to certain devices via. their MAC address. Sometimes you can even set a time when the device is allowed, e.g. you might want your Kindle to go on WiFi at 3 a.m and download new books and what not but not be usable on WiFi at a time when you're actually reading. Edit: Just realized you lost your device but it still stands for future devices. |

not to fault the op specifically, but i find that placing blame on a multi-capable device (whatever device it is) for distracting the user is misplaced. the only device that would qualify is one without wifi connectivity and that is rare. even the reMarkable, a device made with notetaking specifically in mind, has internet connectivity, primarily for syncing notes. but that does not disallow me from loading a book in pdf/epub format so that i could read if i got distracted from taking notes.

It's easy enough to ignore the store, if you just leave the ereader on your library or books screen...now a tablet or phone, that's distracting!!

@zilallti, one thing you can do is after you've registered your Kobo, tell the device to forget the WiFi network. Then you cannot turn on the WiFi as it won't know about it.

No, but do people not know their own WiFi password? Forgetting my network isn't going to stop myself from reconnecting ever at least. You've only added about 10 seconds of extra friction there.
