Way to preserve bookmarks/annotations etc. after re-checkout of expired library book?
Newbie kobo (and ereader) user - Using cloud library I side loaded book thru ADE onto Libra 2. It expired, so had to re-download & side-load again (no way to renew?). Worked fine except all the bookmarks/annotations etc. disappeared. Don't suppose there's any way to get them back, but for next time...When drag/dropping to kobo ereader in ADE, should I have selected 'duplicate' instead of 'replace'? Or is the saved data deleted as soon as a book expires? (Found current chapter/page easily & at least that brought percent read back.)

I haven't tried it for a library book sideloaded via ADE, but, I would have expected the annotations to still be there. The reading status would have been lost, but, not the annotations.
The reason for this is that for epubs, the annotations are stored in two places. One is in the database, the other is in the directory "Digital Editions/Annotations". The database entries would have been removed when the book was replaced. But, the file with the annotations is kept. My experience is that when I replace a book manually, the annotations are loaded from the file when the book is next opened. The file path for the book is what is used to find the annotations file. That means that the replacement book has to be in the same place and the same file name. The behaviour might be different for library books. It is possible the annotations are being deleted when the lending period expires. Or when the book is removed or replaced. You would need to look at the directory above to see what is there at each step. I rarely use the library books or ADE, so I'm not sure what happens. |

Best I can guess from looking at the files and some more googling, the file probably gets overwritten at some point. The original annotations are not present in the file. Both Kindle & Libby claim to preserve them. Will try to investigate further next time.

I watched to see what happens this time:
Annotation file stored in \Digital Editions\Annotations\Digital Editions\<book name-1>.epub.annot Saved file to laptop Book expires; annot file still present Book re-added Annot file still there; new one added named <book name-2>.epub.annot Open book & check annotations - none existing Recheck directory - <book name-1>.epub.annot no longer exists Would it be safe to rename the saved off <book name-1>.epub.annot to <book name-2>.epub.annot and replace the one in \Digital Editions\Annotations\Digital Editions with it? (File appears to contain xml, so somewhat useful even if not. Newbie user; don't want to start mucking things up.) Thanks. |
