How to view a txt file as it is?
Hi,
I have installed koreader because my Pocket Book is not able to open txt files (although the manual claims it was but when I try to open a txt file the screen just goes black, not displaying anything). I'm really glad I have found koreader, installation and opening a txt file with it worked flawlessly. However, koreader does not display the file as it is. For example chapter titles are underlined with a line of equals signs in the file but koreader replaces this line of equal signs with three asterisks. It does not look as nice and reduces readability. Also, I am wondering what other things it changes that I haven't noticed yet. I went through all settings and disabled Style and Style Tweaks. This has changed the spacing of the asterisks but the equals signs are still replaced. So, how do I display a txt file just the way it is? I have found the terminal emulator and `cat /mnt/ext1/mybook.txt` works as expected. And as cool as it is that this is possible I would prefer a way which involves less typing. ![]() Thanks in advance |

I agree, I think that stuff should be stripped out without mercy.

I convert text files in Calibre, or if they are big and important I format & style in LO Writer (Word is good too), saving as odt for later edits and extra Save As docx for Calibre import.
It doesn't take much effort and makes then much easier to read. |

Thank you for your suggestions.
Opening the file in the text editor works but I'm scared I might accidentally change the file, especially because I haven't found a possibility to disable the touch screen with koreader. Converting the file with Calibre is a good idea. No Libre Office or Word even needed, I can directly convert the file with something like `ebook-convert mybook.txt mybook.epub --input-encoding=utf-8 '--chapter=//*[name()='"'"'h1'"'"' or name()='"'"'h2'"'"']' --chapter-mark=none --page-breaks-before=/ --title 'A book' --authors 'My favorite author' --pubdate 'someday'`. It took my some time to figure out the correct options but now this seems like a feasible workaround. This also has the advantage that now I don't need koreader anymore and can disable the touch screen while reading. I'll keep koreader installed, of course. Having a text editor and terminal emulator available may come in handy some day. Thank you. |
