Two kinds of factory resets

FYI:

There are two kinds of factory resets you can do on your Kobo.

The first is the one most people are familiar with. More->Settings->Device information->Factory reset

This type of reset KEEPS the current version of your firmware.

The other type of factory reset is done manually. With the power off you press and hold one of the page turn buttons then press power on. After about 30 seconds the kobo will boot to the way it really came from the factory with the original firmware that came with it.

This can be useful if you want to roll back to an earlier firmware version.

Well, that's how a the factory reset is done for the Forma. There are at least three different methods. If the device has a second button (page turn, home or light), they are usually used, but some use tapping in the screen corners and others need to be connected to power to do it.

And there are at least two other ways to trigger a factory reset. From the Developers options screen is probably the easiest if the device is working. But, there is also a way by forcing the device to reboot several times before nickel starts.

Very true - Some of them have a pin hole that need to be depressed. I just found it interesting that "Factory reset" can mean two different things.

Some of them have a pinhole. None of them use the pinhole as part of the factory reset process. The pinhole reset button triggers a reboot if the device is running. Nothing else.

I suppose it can be used as the way to restart the device when doing the multiple restarts before nickel starts method. But, it's a pain and there are easier ways.

I didn't know about the multiple restarts method.

anyway this might be related, on my Libra 2, using nickelmenu's Reboots and Shut down, my device would cycle to seems like multiple restarts before it eventually restarts, i.e. Screen will turn off, then flash white, then the three dots, then flash white, then three dots again then restarts.

I am not sure if that is how it should be as i believe once the three dots start to appear it should immediately be followed by the home screen already.

Try this:

Power off the device.

Hold down a page turn button and hold down the power button for about 30 seconds or until it starts rebooting. It should get to to where the device was when it actually left the factory.

Good luck!

If I power off my devices and then turn them on again, I get the dancing circles once for a bit and then nickel starts. But, that is not a Libra 2. I wouldn't expect it to be any different. If something else is happening when using NickelMenu reboot, it is probably something in how it does the reboot. I don't use it, so I don't know.
