Reading page anomolies

So sometimes (maybe half the time?) when I open the cover and my Aura One wakes up it goes to the page prior to the page where I last finished reading.

And, at least in the current book, it increments one page number with every page turn except at the end of a chapter. At each chapter it increments 2 page numbers.

Neither are that big a deal, just curiosities.

Anyone experience either of these things?

I experience the latter on my Forma. Sometimes it gets kind of funny at the very end of a book, where the last "page" requires me to press the forward button up to four times. (The very end tends to have very little text, and Kobo's page counting appears to really be a word counting system instead.)

No to the first. Not on my Libra H2O or on my Sage either.

The second, no idea, as I always have only the progress bar displayed, not page numbers, which waste the screen real estate (unlike the Kindle page numbers, which don't)

Yeah, I do think I'm getting that on my Elipsa. Sometimes I wake it and I think, "wasn't I on the next page?" Maybe it's because I went to the next page and immediately put it to sleep and it was too slow updating things.

I seem to remember problems with the Aura ONE as I closed the cover. I frequently would open it and the menus were displayed. It was that a touch could happen through the cover and trigger whatever would normally happen when touching that location.

Is this with epubs or kepubs? Neither have perfect page counting algorithms. And there are some things at the end of chapters. Kepubs have a problem were the page number for the last page of chapter is not incremented. The next should be updated, but, maybe it skips to.

For epubs, the Adobe page numbering algorithm means that page numbering rarely matches the screen. If it is close, then it will frequently get out of sync on the last page. That will depend on exactly where the new page starts on the screen. I have found that I frequently see the page number go up two from the last page of a chapter to the next chapter. And if I turn back, the page number only goes down one.

I don't know an epub from a kepub. These are books I got straight from Kobo via one of my daily book emails like Book Cave Team or similar.

I just finished a chapter a few minutes ago. It incremented 2 pages like all the rest. I turned back and it went back 2 page numbers as well.

OK, purchased from Kobo and downloaded to the device. That means it is a kepub.

Just paged through the current sideloaded kepub and it is not showing the problem. At the font size I use, it is a relatively shout 147 pages and have short chapters.

Trying the last purchased kepub I have read, again, I don't see it. It does show the problem I mentioned (page number not incrementing for the last page in a chapter) and another known problem (page number repeating in the middle of a chapter). Both of which I think are related to the length of the book and the number and length of the chapters.

Are these free books? If so, can you post a link to a couple so we can try them? You should also report this as a problem to Kobo. That lets them know if problems are appearing and that people care about the issues.

Straight from Kobo is a Kepub. In my experience, an Epub doesn't display pages "properly" anyway. A 400 page book might say it has 270 pages, and I might need to advance 10 "pages" to move forward a page. Ironically I find a good Epub to be more accurate, since the Kepub is more "interested" in dividing the book by "page forwards". If I change the font size, an Epub's page count will not change, but a Kepub's page count will.

I just went back to my Kobo after a quite extended time away. It is just the one book so far. I'll keep monitoring through more books to see what happens.

Sorry but I find worrying about "pages" in a reflowable format with variable page and font sizes humourous. Even a page map listing has to relate to a specific paper book edition and you can have multiple pages on a screen or take multiple screens to show a single page. Adobe's synthetic page algorithm has only one advantage in that the page numbers are consistent across devices and are not affected by page or font sizing.

Which firmware and which format are your eBooks? If they are KePub, are they from Kobo or are they converted ePub to KePub and if so, how are you converted?

I have 4.30.18838 and my books are just what Kobo sends to my device when I click add to my books. I don't really know much (anything) about versions and converters and loading etc. etc., just reading.
