Does size matter?
Get your minds out of the gutter.
![]() Folks I'd like some opinions please. The eyes aren't as sharp as they were and I'm looking at giving a larger screen size a go, contenders are the new Paperwhite or the Glowlight Plus. My question really is this, if an extra inch is good, is an extra two even better? Going from my old Kobo Mini to a 6" reader was dramatic, is going from 6" to 6.8" the same? And if so is going the extra to 7.8-8" also a noticeable difference or is it a case of diminishing returns? While I adore my Voyage, the one thing I miss from the Clara was the warm lighting as most of my reading is done in bed. I've no interest in returning to Kobo so I'm looking at the two devices mentioned unless someone has a better recommendation. Wants - 6.8" to 8" screen, warm lighting, audio capability preferred. I know the Nook has no audio, but something about it appeals to me. Many thanks for your input. |

What is the exact reason you don't want to return to Kobo? The Nook may have the same issue, so we can't recommend anything unless we know your likes and dislikes.

The warm lighting on my Glowlight 3 is far superior to the warm lighting on my Kobo Clara. In general, the screen on the Glowlight 3 is very nice. People will make it sound like the Nook software is a shit show. It's not. But it is very basic compared to Kobo and Kindle, so depending on what matters to you a Nook may or may not be for you. But if audio is important, go for the Kindle. |

To be honest I'd rather not start another Amazon vs Kobo debacle, I just didn't enjoy my time with the Clara and it's put me off the brand.
I don't need many features, I'm not fussed about customisation. I'm just after a warm light and decent overall quality, audio would be a bonus. My main question is do those of you with plus 6" readers find the extra real estate worth while, and is bigger & bigger better or is it diminishing returns after a certain point? Jump one inch up or 1.8-2"? |

I have to say this, but the nook is a disaster. Sure the hardware may be OK, but the firmware is awful. Kindle firmware is better, but not by much.
I would give Kobo another go.Especially with the new hardware that seems to be rather good from what I've read. The firmware is better then nook or Kindle and if you want, you can easily install KOReader and/or Plato. The screen of the new Paperwhite is muddy and has shadows. |

OTOH, the PW is much faster than the Nook, which is rather slow. That may not matter to you, of course. |

I also have dodgy old eyes. I have the Forma but I went ahead and bought the Elipsa, which is 10 inches or thereabouts. With its included case the Elipsa is heavy but it's easy to take it out of the case whereupon it's not heavy at all. I'm very glad I bought the Elipsa. I only use the Forma when I'm away from home since the Elipsa is too big to travel with easily. I kind of miss the buttons on the Forma but it's not a big deal now that I've been using the Elipsa for awhile.

Bigger is better. I've upgraded a few times when newer models came out that were also larger. I've got the Oasis and Aura One, about 6.8" and 7.8" respectively. I REALLY like the Kobo for the amount of adjustment available for the fonts, FAR better than what Kindle offers. I'm trading in my 6" PW for the new 6.8" PW. I won't be going from the A1 to the Elipsa, it's just too expensive and maybe a little too big. I still may go for the Elipsa and still hope for a larger Kindle. Good luck with your decisions.

When my Voyage died, I got a Paperwhite. I missed the buttons, so I got a Nook 7.8. I have to say I really like the extra screen real estate. I know a lot of people really want to trash the Nook software, but I don’t have any problems with it. I sideload books with Calibre and it’s all good. I am starting to think I want a flush screen. I don’t know if I want to lose any screen area so I am reluctant to buy an Oasis. I love the larger screen. I picked up my Paperwhite again, but it’s just too little now. Good luck with your decision.

I'm trading in my 6" PW for the new 6.8" Kids PW. It is the same Kindle but it comes with a black cover and 2 years warranty instead of 1. It is on sale now for $115. The trade in gets 20% off plus a $30 giftcard. That's $53 total so it ends up costing only $62 for the new, larger PW. Oh, and it qualifies for Amazon smile so my chosen organization gets 0.5% donation from my purchase as well.

Ok, after another day agonising I've eliminated the Nook. It's a bit silly going to an older device so that's off the table.
I am being swayed though. I can't find a bad review of the Libra 2 anywhere and trust me I've been looking. While I dislike the Kobo UI, it's versatility means I should be able to hook up something alternative. I think I'm going to give Kobo another shot and take a punt at the Libra 2 assuming the UK ever receives any stock, can't find anywhere currently that can give a firm delivery timeframe. Libra 2 owners, tell me what you don't like about the device. Any regrets or grumbles? |

Otherwise, no. The screen is gorgeous, the frontlight excellent, ergonomics nice. Connects to my computer perfectly via USB-C. No regrets. |

Does size matter? YES.
I opted for a Tolino (instead of a Kobo), because you get more store and rental options in Germany for the Tolinos. I wanted a device that I could take outdoors, like when on a walk, and a device that allowed me to read in bed without fatigue. So the decision was between a 6" Tolino Shine 3 and a 7" Tolino Vision 5. The 6" was definitely too small for me, although it might have fitted better in the jacket pocket. I got the 7", which is perfect and lightweight enough for reading in bed, on the couch or on the veranda but doesn’t fit in my inside blazer pocket, only in a coat or my winter jacket. So I now don’t often take it with me on a walk. I didn’t expect one inch to make so much of a difference, but it can… :-) |
