Can I go from 3.48 directly to 5.29?
I thought I had read something about not being able to go directly from 3.48 to 5.0 when it originally came out. I am finally going to update, but now cannot find any information regarding this. Do I need to use a version of 4 to make a smooth transition?
Thanks for any help you can give me : ) |

Calibre will do what is needed to do the update.
Some plugins will need updating because of Python changes. Many popular ones have been done. Alf has fixed his ![]() Be sure to make a backup as the DB does get updated and you might have issues down grading |

I am in the same boat, I have version 3.40.1, I last updated in 2019. I am a bit unsure of what to do since it has been such a long time so I am asking for some advice on what to do. I went into Calibre and backed up the books there. Is that all I need to do before updating the version? Thanks

Make sure to backup your metadata.db; there's some changes to the database structure and reverting to an older Calibre after it upgrades tends to cause errors.
I also suggest backing up the plugins folder from appdata; sometimes getting older versions of plugins is tricky. Then upgrade. Don't be surprised if some of your plugins seem to disappear - chances are they just failed to load and got deactivated because they're outdated. Just re-download the newest version. Calibre uses 2 Places (folders) for every session:
the %appdata% one is you User preferences and plugins (this is per Computer Logon) You want this entire folder tree in your backup and the current Library (default is Calibre Library) |

Just a note to TheDucks and OwnedbyCats (me too) I got the library backed up and downloaded the current Calibre software. Loaded the new plugins and got a couple of my newer e-books backed up. Appreciate the help.
