News download sections missing on kindle android app
News downloads from recipes sent to my kindle devices always have sections and highlights views available from the top menu within the document. The sections view displays section titles in left pane and article titles in right pane. Using the amazon android app, the news feed appears like a book without the sections display option. Can this native kindle periodical view be achieved on the android app by a change in the recipe or email settings, or is it just a limitation of the android app?
The news downloads appear on the kindle as pobi file type, and a regular book sent from calibre has an azw file extension on the kindle. Thanks in advance. |

The main difference between a regular Kindle e-book and a Kindle periodical is how the table of contents is presented. The display for a periodical is much richer, potentially presenting a summary and an image for each article.
When you email a MOBI file it is delivered to Kindle apps and devices marked as a personal document (CDEContentType=PDOC). A periodical purchased from Amazon is instead marked as a newspaper (CDEContentType=NWPR) or magazine (CDEContentType=MAGZ). A Kindle device displays a periodical properly regardless of the content type, however the Kindle for Android app will not display a periodical as a periodical if the content type indicates that it is a personal document. One way around this problem is to side load the periodical file from calibre to the Kindle for Android app via USB instead of sending by email. |

So wrt keeping the periodical format of the news downloads, does a Kindle fire device behave like a basic Kindle or like the android Kindle app? Using the calibre automated email feature, I always have the periodical format on my Kindle devices but never on my android devices.
From your suggestion, I tried usb transfer of a news download to the android app on one of my tablets and was not successful. Windows recognizes the tablet in file manager mode but calibre did not see it in the right-click menu (send to device). I drag&dropped a news download into the kindle document folder but it would not open in the app. From your suggestion 'side load the file' is there something I did not do correctly for usb transfer? Thanks again. |

When I tested it I copied the .mobi periodical file to the Books folder on my Android device via USB. After opening the Kindle app the newspaper appeared in the library view. I don’t have my Fire tablet with me right now so I can’t try that.

When I copy the .mobi periodical file to the Books folder on my Android device via USB, the document does appear in the Kindle app Library view of downloaded documents, however it can not be opened (there is a black background 1 at right side of this document title in Library view, and a check mark along the documents sent via calibre email which all can be opened).
I have not found a way in the android app to display the Kindle Periodical toolbar when viewing a news download. Copy of the toolbar attached showing the 'Sections' view option accessed via press at top of screen while displaying the news download document. So is this a limitation of the app, not how the news download was created in calibre, preventing section and highlights views? |
