Did my Kobo just wipe itself?

So I plugged in my Kobo Aura HD to upload my latest batch of fanfic updates. Nothing went wrong. So I ejected and...

Now it's doing the import process. It shouldn't be doing that as none of the books are new ones, just existing ones being overwritten.

And... now is half of my "to be read" collection is missing, as is all the books that were listed on the front screen.

I plug my Kobo back in. And got a malformed disk image error. I unplug and then after a very long pause the Kobo setup screen appears.

EDIT: All my sideloaded books seem to be intact. So I'm going to to try restore database.

...
I thought it was undesireable to overwrite existing ebooks?

If it is, I've never run into any issues with it aside from needing to update the TOC with Kobo Utilities.

If you replace a book, the device will remove the book from the database and then import it as a new book. But, the drivers in calibre can cheat and prevent that. But, it doesn't reimport the metadata or the ToC. The driver can fix the former, and the Kobo Utilities plugin can fix the latter.

@ownedbycats: That says that the database was corrupted somehow. And corrupted badly enough that the device could not use it. That triggered setup to be done. After that, it should have imported all the sideloaded books.

Restoring the last good backup and restarting the device after disconnecting should fix it. You will need to connect to the PC to trigger importing any books not on the device when the backup was taken. And then sort out your reading status.

I tried to restore the database from my backup, but I ran into an error when trying to update my ToC on books that had been updated since it was taken so I reset again. It seems to be sorted out now though I did lose all my reading time stats.
