Kobo claims large PDF I created is DRM protected

I have a large (1.3 GB) file I created - a bunch of world history PDFs strung together for easy searching.

When I try to open it Kobo claims its DRM protected.

Clearly not true.

Any ideas?

Kobo's website when you upload or a kobo ereader?

They'd be better as an epub, but if the sources are PDF, then as separate PDFs. It's too big.

I managed to fix it

1. Create a one page PDF
2. Give it the same name as the problem file
3. Put that PDF into Adobe Digital Editions
4. Send it to Kobo
5. Copy the problem file into 'Digital Editions' folder on Kobo
(it has same name)

(8000 pages as a pdf)

FTR: it also opens in Koreader no problem, and Koreader manages to search it surprisingly quickly.

What do you mean "Send it to Kobo"?

I am in awe of your troubleshooting skills.. but can't help but wonder that could possibly lead you to this bizarre sequence of document loading

I do not believe that will have actually done anything different. When you use ADE to send an epub or PDF to your device, it isn't updating anything on the Kobo device that Kobo uses except the book. When you disconnect, Kobo still just looks for new or updated books and imports them. And if you replace a copy of a book that was previously imported, if the file size changes, the book is actually removed from the database and imported as a new book.

Also, ADE puts the books in the root of the books drive, not in the "Digital Editions" directory. If that is what you have done, I would expect that you have both versions of the book.

For the error, I have seen that on occasion for DRM-free books. Frequently, restarting the device and removing the book and adding it again fixes the problem. Occasionally, it has been a problem with the database and it needed for the database to be rebuilt. And it has been an error in the book that needed to be fixed.

Indeed effectively the book WAS removed and re-added maybe twice!
It's a crazy size. I've a 52 Mbyte epub that started off as 71 books. Someone thought it would be clever to combine them for one attractive sale. I plan to chop it up.

With a 1.3GB file size and 8,000 pages, I come up with an average of ~170KB per page which suggests the PDF pages are scanned images and not text. Since the OP mentions searching, there is, probably, a hidden text layer created by OCR in at least some of the pages.
