Question Stuck on "Converting input as a text based book..."
Hey all long time user of calibre without any issues until, unsurprisingly, yestereday when I decided to attempt converting Oxford's English Dictionary, and I mean the full one, not the concise one, from epub to PDF. Oh boy, my PC did not like it, got up to 15.8GB out of 16GB of RAM, but Calibre to it's credit did get through all the initial parsing. It hasn't crashed or frozon, as the application and associated windows are all responsive, but it has been stuck on "Converting input as a text based book..." for 10+ hours (left it on over night), so I'm guessing it's stuck, as there isn't much/any hard drive or CPU usage by the processes. Will post the full log below. Any suggestions on what I might do to get it over the threshold? I used penelope to convert the original stardict to epub; are there any other formats that might be easier to convert to PDF from instead of epub?

PDF output is extremely memory intensive and slow (it requires rendering everything in the book, in multiple passes), you are going to have a tough time converting a dictionary to that.

Hehehe that's for sure! Well the actual memory and CPU intensive parts of the conversion process seemed to have finished, the memory usage dropped from 15GB to about 7GB, and it just sat there for 12 hours. Do you think it was still actually running? My PC ended up crashing earlier today whilst it was still in the background at the same 70% mark cause I forget it was on and used too much RAM with other processes, so didn't get to find out... :S

EDIT: And I checked out the cache files earlier in the process and then after the crash and the outputted PDF file (I'm assuming as it was the only PDF formatted file in there) hadn't changed size (stuck at 3 bytes)

Okay, I can give that a try. But penelope doesn't support rtf output (from stardict), I'm sure I can find something that will, but any recommendations of a preferred conversion software?

yes it would have been running. the entire book is rendered in separate pdf files which are all read into ram and combined and then duplciate font and image data deduplicated, and only then is the final pdf written out. As long as it doesnt crash i would let it run.

Oh no! Oh well, guess I'll try it again. But it was hardly using any CPU or HDD resources though? You think that's normal? And normal to take maybe 24+ hours to finish? Sorry about all the questions! <3

Calibre converts epub and mobi to RTF very well. I do that to fix abysmal versions of PD texts that can't simply be fixed in the Calibre editor. Then I edit in Word (not since 2014) or LO Writer, saving in native format. Word and LO Writer do PDF output fine.
