Paperwhite 3 & 4 with fw 5.13.5
I have a PW3 and a PW4 with firmware 5.13.5

I see that the latest version that is available to jailbrake is 5.13.3

so is there any way to downgrade the firmware to 5.13.3 ?

or any other way of jailbreaking these devices ?

is it possible to create a fake update with KindleTool and downgrade to 5.13.3 this way ?

Kindles have had built in guards against firmware version downgrade for years.

Your PW3 can still be jailbroken using its internal hardware serial port. (You have to open the case.) See the thread

There is no way known at this time to jailbreak your PW4.

actually I am not good at soldering and I don't have a 1.8V supplying USB-serial converter at the moment.
So I better stay away that method for the PW3...

I had thought that it would be possible to "update" to a fake "5.13.6" using a 5.13.3 firmware and some tool like KindleTool.
Otherwise what's that tool for anyway ?

Kindles will only update from cryptologically signed files. Jailbroken kindles will accept the mobileread developer key. That is what jailbreaking is. Nonjailbroken kindles only accept the amazon key, which only amazon has.

For jailbroken kindles there have been speculative discussions of disguising a lower version as a higher version, but I don't know of anyone doing it.

There is a remote possibility that a jailbreak for 5.13.5 will be found, but it could be years, or never.

I waited some 1.5 years before a software jailbreak was available for my PW3. Kept it in airplane mode all the time. To be honest I had pretty much resigned myself to the possibility that it might not happen.

well , if that is the situation, then I might totally miss it when it comes...
I will forget this and continue using my PW3 & PW4 with limited functionality.

It still might be possible to buy a new PW4 that has firmware less than 5.13.5 out out the box, but it might not be long before that is no longer true.

well , I really would like to have my own photos as screensaver.
additionally I would love PDF support and optimized comics.

and a chess game would be lovely.

but I really don't want to invest on a new reader when I already have these 2 PWs
and these are all optional. As a e-book reader, PW is good.

I used to visit Mobileread regularly but pretty much stopped after 6-7 months when it looked like no exploit would be found. I had subscribed to ebook reader and digital reader blogs. First came the news of Kindle Drip and some months later the jailbreak based on it.

On my KT2 while in diags I can use battery power instead of 1.8V external power, so maybe you can have a try on your PW3(be careful not to connect vcc on your converter to anywhere on your device and only connect TX, RX and GND)

PW4 is easy to tear apart, but it may damage the ability of waterproof, if you want to do serial jailbreaking.
There is even no glue to keep you from taking it apart.
I geuss the uboot commands will be the same, but IDK though.

I've done it once when FW was 5.13.2(I've downloaded KUAL, etc), but turned on WiFi and slept by a mistake and it got updated to 5.13.6
