Forma vs Oasis, better contrast?
Well, that’s the question, which of this devices has better screen? Contrast is most important for me

All my devices with glass screen have better contrast than those with Mobius. But the Forma has other advantages like weight, no (books) dependence on Amazon etc. |

I'd say that the Oasis has slightly better contrast, but it's not enough to outweigh the advantages of the Kobo. The user interface of the Kobo is far superior to the Kindle's. The Kobo is also definitely easier to hold with the side slightly angled up where the page turn buttons are. The metal of the Kindle makes it cold and unpleasant for me to hold (or maybe it's the glass since I do have a cover on it). And the additional screen size on the Kobo, even though it's not a lot, definitely makes a difference.
I still buy my books from Amazon and use Calibre to convert them to epub. Last edited by hobnail; 06-02-2021 at 01:22 PM. |

A Mobius screen has a plastic substrate which is behind the opaque eInk display (if you look at a cross-section of an eInk display, the top electrode is labelled as transparent while the bottom electrode is not and the eInk capsules/cups are themselves opaque). So a claim that having a Mobius display could affect display contrast is a bit hard to understand. Much like @otisschwenk's agreement that Mobius displays are lumpy, the claim seems to lack any visible means of support. This is saying nothing of the layers above the display (touch, protective top layer, etc.) which can affect the display.
Having a Forma myself and having compared it with an Oasis, I did not notice any difference in the display contrast with or without the frontlight on. As to why Mobius displays are superior, check this video of a Forma undergoing a twist test. Last edited by DNSB; 06-02-2021 at 03:07 PM. |

Mobius displays are always produced with plastic outer layers, which are far inferior to glass in terms of transparency. And if you claim that your Forma is as sharp and contrasty as your Kindle, then you're not seeing well, or ..... |

One thing to note. The Oasis suffers from the same issue that's plagued Kindle's for a very long time. The problem is that Kindle do not dither images all that well. Kobo does a better job at dithering and you get more detail. Amazon just doesn't care to fix their poor dithering.
Kobo did improve the dithering at some point. |

GoodEReader compared the Forma to the Oasis and they did say that the background of the Forma was slightly lighter.

You can only see the outer layers of the screen, the ones in front of the module, and these are less transparent on a Mobius screen than on a glass screen. In fact, there's a reason why Mobius technology is only used on large screens, and has recently been replaced by glass at 10.3 inches due to new mounting concepts. But of course, someone who wants to bend their devices must prefer Mobius. BTW: even Kobo uses Mobius only on the Forma, whose only advantage over the 7.8 inchers is its light weight. |
