Rearranging books on Kindle. Can metadata be fixed?

Can books in collections be rearranged on a Kindle Oasis? Here are two specific examples.

I have all the alphabet books by Sue Grafton. I've put them in a collection and arranged by author. The problem is that "A is for Alibi" comes up in-between "I is for Innocent" and "J is for Judgement." When I look at them in Calibre, the problem seems to be that "A is for Alibi" has the metadata title of "Is for Alibi, A"

Another one of my collections is the Fairyland series by Catherynne Valente. Most of the books appear correctly, but one of them appears after a book by Gene Wolfe. In this case the problem seems to be that "The Girl Who Circumnavigated Fairlyand in a Ship of Her Own Making" has no author metadata associated with it.

Is there a way of fixing those problems so that the books display correctly? Thank you all for any advice you may have on this matter.

You can sort in the collection by the title.

Go into the collection and select sort (upper right) and then select Title.

You can edit metadata in books without DRM protection using free software like Calibre or Sigil.

Right. The problem is that my kindle thinks the title of the book is "Is for Alibi, A" and so it sorts it between I and J rather than under A.

You can change the titles to something like...

Kinsey Millhone 01 - A is for Alibi
Kinsey Millhone 02 - B is for Burglar

And so on.

That's the part that I don't know how to do. I can change it in Calibre, but then I can't send the new information back to my Kindle because of DRM. These are all books that I bought from Amazon, so I don't know how to edit the metadata and get the Kindle to recognize the edits that I've made.

I use a plugboard. When stuff is sideloaded, it will show in series order numbered. You don't have to change each and every title in Calibre - the plugboard just adds that info to the front of your title. Shows up similar to the listing JSWolf has above.

Yep. And of course it's always wise to remove the DRM from your legally purchased books, unless you never reread and backing up your purchases is not important to you. The added benefit of liberated books is that you can change metadata and files themselves as much as you want.
