Error with Apple .epub file
I get the following error when I try to load in an epub from Apple.

calibre, version 5.17.0
WARNING: Errors while adding: There were problems adding some files, click "Show details" for more information

Failed to add the file /Users/Kay/Pictures/iPad User Guide iPadOS 14.5.epub to the book: /Users/Kay/Pictures/iPad User Guide iPadOS 14.5
With error:

IsADirectoryError: [Errno 21] Is a directory: '/Users/Kay/Pictures/iPad User Guide iPadOS 14.5.epub'

Directory works fine with Calibre and other .epub files.
Tried changing file name - no help.

I think this is because Apple expands the Epub and does not actually leave the original .epub file; instead there is a folder called <book title>.epub

@PeterT is correct, if you a google a bit you will find some scripts to turn these exploded epubs of apples back into actual epub files.

I have googled high and low. Perhaps I'm not using the right keywords.
Could you please post a pointer to one of these scripts.

Search with google for mobileread epub zip macos gives the the following ink to a drag ad drop epub zip and unzip tool:

I use Paul's tool on my macOS machine all the time.

I tried that. It created a new epub for me but within Calibre I still get a DRM error trying to convert to mobi.
So now I have an iPad user guide that is in an epub format that Calibre can read but I still can't get it to my kindle Oasis.

Any other help?

To convert any book it must be DRM free. That happens on import with the DRM tools plugin but Books/iBooks DRM is not one of the DRM versions the tools know how to deal with.
