Question DRM on purchased book ?

I purchased an ebook from Amazon. So why do I get the message that the DRM is locked when I try to view it using Calibre? I thought this message did not apply to ebooks purchased legitimately.

You thought wrong. I think most books bought from Amazon do have DRM.

Most eBooks regardless of format and where purchased has DRM.

You want to install the DeDRM 7.2.1 plugin for Calibre 5.x.

I don't have to put this DRM tool in the Calibre directory? I just unzip it and that's it?

You certainly can. But without removing the DRM, only on a device or software supplied by the company that sold you the book. (Or sometimes, by devices that have licensed the DRM system used.)

Otherwise, DeDRM is your friend. Read up on it at Apprentice Alf's blog. Detailed help with DRM removal isn't permitted at MobileRead.

Given that calibre is not an Amazon registered app or device which understands how to read an Amazon DRMmed ebook? Welcome to the real world!

You will need to unzip the downloaded DeDRM_tools_x.y.z.zip file and then use calibre's Preferences => Plugins => Load plugin from file to install the DeDRM_plugin.zip and optionally the Obok_plugin.zip files (for Kobo's DRM).

X.y.z is the version number, currently calibre 5.xx uses 7.2.1.

For more information, check Apprentice Alf's blog or Apprentice Harper's DeDRM github page.

Amazon books are tied to your account and the various Kindle devices and apps you have registered to that same account. Nothing has changed, it's always been that way. Download the book to your registered Amazon devices.

If you want to read those same books on non registered devices, you need to strip the DRM.

@ChipAHoy you will need to use the Download & Transfer via USB which is in Manage your Content and Devices. You then click the ... to the left of the eBook's title.

It should download the eBook in KF8 which can have the DRM removed once you have DeDRM installed and properly configured.

Thanks for your reply. I thought that since I couldn't view the ebook using Calibre, I wouldn't be able to read it on my Kindle.

What you buy from Amazon or anywhere else is the right to read the book, for a printed book you own the paper and ink on which it is printed, but you don't get to own the bits and bytes in which an ebook is stored, for unlike ink on paper they can be copied a million times in as many seconds.
