About 40 minutes ago I added an epub book to Calibre after updating to calibre-4.10.1 and got the "preparing book for first read. please wait." message. Still waiting. It was pretty slow after the last update, but this is getting painful.

I decided to load the epub to my Nexus 7 tablet without using Calibre, and am able to read it just fine in Smart Reader, so I cannot understand why Calibre is taking so long to do whatever it is doing.

I'm not in the least bit 'tech-y' so I don't know if there are other circumstances I should be looking at. My Calibre is on my old Dell Alien, running Windows 7.

I moved your post into its own thread, the one you posted to was about MOBI.

Could you try opening the book in ebook editor, if it's slow I suggest you relocate the cache directory, see CALIBRE_CACHE_DIRECTORY in Environment variables. Maybe the SSD on that old Alien is getting a bit flaky.

The file opened fairly quickly in editor, so thankfully I didn't have to try to find and relocate the cache you mentioned.

I'm thinking perhaps you're right about my ancient Dell Alien. I bought a new computer on Boxing Week sale, but I've been avoiding setting it up. Maybe this will prompt me to get busy.

Thanks for the help.

Yes, this issue still exists in 5.16.1 on a very fast Linux machine. First read setup time shouldn't take several seconds.

Thanks for that!
I haven't had the slow first read lately, but it's somehow comforting to know I wasn't the only one experiencing this bit of annoyance.
