Question about ratings

Ratings are on a 1-5 scale, with zero being a null. However, while messing around with search and replace, I found the numbers appear doubled:

So I went and looked at the books_ratings_link table in metadata.db and it was in 1-5 range.

Why does it display doubled in some places? I also noticed it in the Audit Log plugin.

They are stored internally as 0-10 not 1-5

interesting because this is what the rating table looks like to me (0s were not present):

Is there any purpose for it being a 0-10? I know that requests for a 10-point rating column with half-stars were turned down a few times.

Undefined is zero. The 1..10 storage is a historical artifact. Half-star ratings are available for custom ratings columns.

Now I am curious what would happen if something forced it to use an odd number.

That is difficult to arrange, but if you succeeded then I would expect nothing good to happen.

I would expect either an error when trying to calculate what to display, or it to round it to an even number (whether up or down I am not sure).
