New Kobo, ePub vs Kepub

Hi there, I’m delighted with my new Kobo Líbra, particularly the appearance of the fonts and page layout that make it appear so much more like the page in a book than my kindle does.

So, having read around in here over the past few days prior to its arrival, I knew I was probably going to prefer the page appearance in EPUB, being a stickler for kerning and ligatures and the tiny details that contribute to give this reader its gorgeous rendering.

Sure enough, after trying both formats, I greatly prefer the ePub. Although I like the visual illustration of chapter length, etc. and all the other good things in Kepub, I find the page layout is much better in ePub, with fewer split words, etc.

But... why is there always a but?

When I rotate my side loaded (saved the ePub format to the kobo from Calibre) EPUBs, they do a glitchy thing where the whole page shrinks, flashes, then resizes to the correct size.

Has anyone else seen this?

Can anyone suggest what to do? Is there maybe a patch?

I updated the firmware as soon as I got it as wanted to use the MyWords feature, as I’m a Kindle Vocabulary Builder user for my French.

Software version is 4.26.16704, dated 2/10/21

I so rarely use the landscape layout that I have it disabled. But, checking now, I see the same thing with epubs. I think you are going to have to accept this as a "feature". It is probably happening because of the way the Adobe RMSDK works and the interaction with UI. The Adobe RMSDK is what is used for rendering epubs and there are lots of interesting things with how it works.

You should report it as an issue to Kobo. It is possible they can fix it, but, they need to know people care about it before they are likely to spend time on it.

Thanks David, I’m surprised no-one has mentioned it on here before... I’ve changed my EPUBs to Kepubs as I can’t put up with the flashing and page resizing each time I change position. I don’t want to turn off the auto-rotate, so this is what I have gone with. I managed to get the kepubs to look better (I think! Not sure if it is my imagination!) by reconverting them from the original EPUB and changing settings in Calibre to EPub 2 output and turning on 'keep ligatures’ before converting.

I can report it to Kobo, but if it’s only me who cares about this, I don’t suppose they’ll do anything.

You can even make kerning work in kepubs, but it will mess up word spacing even more (by default it's already worse than in epubs), especially after punctuation marks.

You may want to consider installing KOReader, it might handle the epubs better in landscape than the stock Kobo app

If you like hyphenation, you may want to install a better hyphenation dictionary.

Thanks, I probably will install this at some point, but for now I’m happy reading the Kepubs.

And, thanks, JSWolf for the link to the hyphenation dictionaries. Sorry, don’t know how to have two quotes in the same post.

I love my Kobo Libra, finally, I’ve found THE ONE.

For multi-quoting, use the multi-quote button (the icon that looks like stacked pages between the big Quote button and the small quick reply button. For the final message you are quoting from use the Quote button. That is, if you are quoting from 3 messages, multi-quote the first two and then quote the third.
