Option to switch metadata window's Star rating menu to decimal values

With all the excellent version updates to Calibre over the years, it is ponderous why the 'Rating' drop-down menu in the Metadata window is still using only a broad inaccurate 'Five Star' visual representation. Is there a plugin that can provide the ability to replace (or switch) that drop-down menu with a scrolling 3 digit decimal (i.e.→ 4.27) list like Goodreads uses, or can Kovid or someone consider including this feature in a future version?

You can add your own rating column with support for half stars. But the builtin one is always going be an out of 5 rating.

Thumbs up Don't know how to do that

Okay... I figured out how to do that and at least half-stars provide a little more definition to the ratings.

Thanks Kovid,

Don't forget to restart after you add the column.

You can use an integer custom column to set ratings using as fine a scale as you wish. That won't give you the dropdown list your screenshot shows.

___________

Now that's the part I've never been able to figure out. The custom 'Rating' column was a no brainer once Kovid showed me how, but every time I experiment with adding other custom columns I fail miserably. I'm just not savvy enough to fill in the fields correctly I guess, and there's no visual examples for a dummy to refer to for each type of column. At least I couldn't find the subject within the Calibre Help pages.

I don't suppose you could give me a screenshot of what an 'Integer Column' setting looks like in the 'Add Column' menu.....?

Thanks, Frizzell

I was wrong -- you want a floating point column to get the fractional part. Here is a 'shot of a definition dialog and a 'shot of what displays in the booklist.

OH WOW!!! THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!
There is no way on earth that I could have come up with that definition. I don't even know what it means. Maybe you should think about creating a blog where Calibre examples live. To me you're a Wizard.

Thanks So Much,
Frizzell

This is really great chaley! I just have one more inquiry. Is it possible to have the initial (or default or pre-filled) field set to '3.00' instead of 'Undefined'? (see screenshot) And would you be so kind as to once more show me what to change in order to do it?

Thanks chaley,

You need to do two things:
  1. Change the "default" in the custom column definition from 0.0 to 3.0. This sets the default for any new books.
  2. For existing books you need to set it manually. This isn't hard. Steps:
    1. Search for all books with an undefined GR value. I don't know what lookup name you chose. If you chose #gr then in the search bar enter #gr:false.
    2. Select all the books the search finds. Ctrl-A works on windows.
    3. Type E for bulk metadata edit.
    4. Select the Custom metadata tab
    5. Enter 3.0 in the GR box
    6. Press Apply

THANKS AGAIN charley!!! It worked perfectly. I made all the undefined books 2.00 since I don't keep books with less than a 3.00 rating, so I could tell which ones need updated. I realized that making it 3.0 would obscur any books that actually are 3.0.
Almost messed myself up there... At any rate, I love this!

Thanks chaley,
Frizzell
