Genre Configuration
Hello All,
With the help of several forum threads, I organized my library (3,000 +) by Genres and sub-Genres, and is it is a lot easier to manage and enjoy. ![]() I attempted the Genre custom column using the type "Text, but with a fixed set of set of permitted values." With that, I assigned each Genre a color and enjoyed the fixed drop-down list. However, for me to configure a nested hierarchy, I followed the manual and used the column type "Text, column shown in the Tag browser." My question: Is it possible to have my cake and eat it too? This means to have my nested hierarchy of genres available in that fixed drop down list? Hopefully my question makes sense. If not, please ask and I will do my best to clarify. With much appreciation, CalibreBee ![]() |

If you mean hierarchical in the tag browser then the answer is yes. Put periods in the permitted values. This process that will be painful because you must replace the original values with the new values. I would do this by first "mark"ing the books with a particular value, change the value by adding dots, then using bulk metadata edit to change the values. Alternatively, start over with a new column.
Once the column is prepared, go to Preferences / Look & feel / Tag browser and add the lookup key for the "text with fixed values" column. Just as with the "normal" hierarchical columns you won't see the hierarchy anywhere other than in the tag browser. |

Hello Gentlemen,
I am sorry for not responding sooner. I work in healthcare and since COVID, my schedule is demanding a lot more me. BetterRed, yes, my Genre custom column appears in the Tag browser. Chaley, I gave it a try. And the end result defeated the purpose of my reason for liking the fixed drop-down column. For me, it's quick to click and move on. But, I have 16 Genres and many sub-Genres. So, the quick to click, turned into scroll and search effort. I really appreciate your suggestions ![]() Once I get my Calibre (libraries) set in a way I like it, and the virus is defeated, I will have time to read ![]() Many thanks, CalibreBee ![]() |
