Note 2/3 as a Bed Time Reader ?
IF I thought it was hard to get a hands on with the Kobo Libra/Forma, these Boox are simply not available to check out - and hard for a Canadian to buy.
But, if I manage to find a safe place to buy... How realistic is the Note 2/3 as a bedtime eReader? If good, I'd actually maybe take back my Kobo Libra and just get a Note for both MS Word writing, and eReader. I know it's less than the weight of most trade paperbacks and larger books, but sizewise, is 10.3 just too awkward for bedtime ? Lastly, does the Kobo app work on it? I prefer to get my books as epubs, and from Kobo or Chapters online. Thanks again |

An iPad Mini at 7.9" is not awkward. It's about the largest size that works while in bed. SO the largest I would get would be at 8" screen. |

Well, I use my Note Pro every evening. However, I usually read in landscape with two columns, so not really heavy.
If I read in portrait, I usually get something to prop it up. Either my legs, a pillow or an iron angle plate (or corner angle): I've a few neodymium magnets on the back that they stick to. (Of course, there are a lot of covers that do the same for you with clever folding and whatnot. However, I had these handy and wanted to read comfortably now. Obviously, they iron gets lost most of the time, so I use my legs or a pillow most often. ) As my eyes are slowly getting past their prime for reading, I find that the extra space is very nice: Even when the font increases while my eyes tire and my brain doesn't, there is a large amount of text: So I don't have to turn a page all that often. @JSWolf 61k posts! Really a _lot_ of posting. I am flabbergasted. Last edited by Markismus; 03-04-2021 at 07:10 AM. |

It depends on how you hold your bedtime reader, Note2 or Note3(the new model) is too heavy to hold by one hand for a long time reading. It has a perfect size and front light to read with, and the standup case or holder could make you feel comfortable. If you like to hold your ereader, I think Nova could be nice.

A 10.3" e-reader in landscape mode is about the size and weight of a paperback book. Is a paperback book uncomfortable to read in bed? Certainly more uncomfortable than a 10.3" e-reader. Honestly, it's a matter of habit. I used to read in bed with a 6" e-reader and now I read in bed with a 10.3" e-reader. And I still read comfortably. And when e-readers didn't exist, I used to read books of different sizes in bed. The "ideal size" is as always a matter of taste and habit. Personally, now that I have a 10.3" e-reader, I wouldn't trade it for a smaller one. Neither for reading in bed, nor for reading anywhere else. I've gotten used to that size and I don't want to go back to a smaller size.

I use a paper book in a completely different position than a reader - even in bed.
There the book is on the bed and I move into the position to be able to read properly and if I want to change my position, then I have to do the same with the book. With a reader, I lie comfortably in bed and hold it in a position that is comfortable for me. The first would work with a 10.3 inch device, the second is inconvenient. In bed I prefer a device that is as light and handy as possible. My Tolino Epos 2 (Android 4.4.2) - 8 inch, 195 g, landscape format, 2 columns - fits perfectly. When we talk about a 10.3" e-reader we think of a bulky, huge and heavy device. The reality is that it is much more like a paper book than a smaller e-reader. And we magnify problems we've never had before with a paper book. I was very skeptical of this size. I thought it was going to be very uncomfortable to use in any situation. And I was surprised to find that the reading experience is very pleasant. I like this size the best, but I understand that my personal tastes are not the same as someone else.
On the other hand, in bed I don't usually do prolonged reading. For short periods of time I see no downside to using a 10.3" e-reader. And for longer reading periods there are solutions perfectly adaptable to any situation. I use an octopus tripod where I place the e-reader (or a tablet if I want to watch a movie) that adapts perfectly to any position in bed (or anywhere else). |

Nice one. We have that one unused in a drawer somewhere. I'll put a plastic suction thingy on it, so it'll stick to the back of the e-reader. (Or something iron to stick totl the magnet.

I use it with a tablet adapter on the top.
But any imaginative solution will do. Here I have it hooked to a water pitcher... https://drive.google.com/folderview?...FBaHewknsdLsKJ |

I wouldn't go past 7.8/8" for general comfortable reading size. I have average size male hands. |

In short: the four books on the right must be read in the living room, and the three books on the left are suitable for reading in bed.

Small book: 11 x 18 cm Medium book: 13 x 20 cm Large book: 15 x 24 cm (See attached picture). This is how they are closed. But when you read, you open the book. Fully open their size would be: Small book: 18 x 22 cm Medium book: 20 x 26 cm Large book: 24 x 30 cm Any of these sizes we have used and continue to use thousands of times to read in bed. It is a common thing for anyone who reads books in bed. Of course the weight of these books varies, but I am convinced that the average is well over 300 grams. My 10.3" e-reader weighs 310 grams and has a size in landscape mode of 17.5 x 25 cm (approximately). So I reaffirm that anyone accustomed to reading should have no particular problem using it in bed. Is a 6" reader more comfortable to read in bed? In terms of weight and size of the device, undoubtedly. In terms of reading quality, it will depend on what you are reading and the specific person reading. I have read in bed with 5", 6", 6.8", 7", 7.8", 8" and 10.3" e-readers. And with all of them I have read comfortably. As comfortably as when I read heavier and bigger paper books in bed. I will not be the one to put limitations on myself. https://drive.google.com/file/d/19BI...w?usp=drivesdk |
