DIY hardcase idea

What is rigid, customizable, fairly cheap, and fun for adults and children? Lego building blocks. Just use something to seal the blocks and it will be plenty durable and just glue some foam to the inside of the enclosure for extra protection. Plus the Lego Digital Designer program which is free from Lego (Windows and Mac) will tell you exactly what you need to build your design and let you buy it right from them. Here's the PDF of parts for my prototype. I can't attach the actual lego file but if my measurements are correct this should fit the reader with the stock case.

EDIT: I figured out how to save the instructions as an html file, so in the zip it's the parts list, the instructions and any images included. My first time using the Lego Designer app so I wasn't sure if I could. And ideally I would build the case using all black pieces, Monolith style.

I loved playing with legos when I was a kid.

I could probably pick up the pieces locally as there is a Legoland Discovery Center about 10 minutes from my house. It is the only one of it's kind in the U.S. (there are two in Germany). I imagine they would have all the pieces available.

This is a great idea, love it. Would love to see pics of a completed one.

heh, thanks for the welcome (long time lurker but I just received my 505 last thursday) and the praise thus far for the Lego case idea. So far it's still in the prototype phase mostly because, like an idiot, I was going off the outside dimensions and not taking into account the INSIDE. Also, I made it roughly three Lego bricks high but I'm sure I could trim that down a bit. For the measurements of the actual lego pieces I used http://www.mapageweb.umontreal.ca/co...ment/index.htm and http://web.me.unr.edu/me151/building/legobuild.htm as guides. I just want to give my schematics a once over when I get home from work so I can redesign it with all black bricks and then order the bricks from Lego. I wish I had a lego store near me so I can just go there build it and buy it.

Did you ever end up making the case? I've been waiting to see what it would look like.
