Repeat indexing
On my Paperwhite 4 I'm seeing that it keeps indexing books even though I have only added a few. The week before last it suddenly decided to start indexing all the books on the device, over 2,000. It had finally got to 157 at the beginning of today, but is now back to over 740. What on earth is going on?

I wonder if by having so many books on your Kindle, that this caused it to overrun storage somewhere. This type of aberrant behavior is usually a software bug due to a developer not realizing that a user would surpass some arbitrarily huge limit the developer had set. Once memory/storage gets overrun, it can get corrupted, so the Kindle might think it needs to start indexing all over again. And the second attempt will probably end as badly as the first.
I assume you are using Calibre, since most here do. If not, definitely look into it as your primary ebook organization. Then only put a few books on your Kindle rather than thousands. Swap a reasonable amount of books in and out as you finish some and need others to choose from. I generally keep one to two dozen "potential next reads" on my Kindle - so I have a choice, but not an overwhelming one. Calibre holds all the rest to be swapped in later, as the need arises. A Kindle would be very poor at navigating 2000 books, the user interface for that is just too poor IMHO. I believe the Kindle indexes every word in every book. Ugh - that's quite a task for such a low powered device (processor/ram) to manage. Plus, trying to index so much all at once (like yours appears to be doing now) will run down the battery quickly. If it dies part way through indexing, that's another potential pathway to corruption. |

That's really helpful. Thankyou. I'll delete most books off the device apart from series like politics and philosophy that are evergreen sources of reading material, which stands at around 550 books. If I want to read something else I can add as necessary. That should hopefully help the situation

I had about 1600 books on my PW3, no problems.
Almost 1900 on the Kobo Libra. It does that if files have been inconsistently deleted. Sometimes if Collections are synced as Kindle collections seem a bit broken right now. Keep connected to laptop after software eject if you add books till indexing is done. |

I have over 3000 books on my 32GB Oasis. No indexing problems. I load and delete books from Calibre and don't use collections, so possibly that helps.

The problem can be if any of these books have errors. That can cause indexing errors.
What you need to do is load your eBooks in batches of no more then 100 eBooks at a time. But you have to take note of what's already loaded and what you just loaded so you'll know what's going on in case you have to start over. |
