Dictionary that has sound
Is there an app or a eReader that has a built in dictionary that says the word? My niece is very behind for her age, and we're working on it, but she enjoys reading books that are at her level but there's a lot of words she doesn't know (she's 10). Just the dictionary doesn't help much as she's pretty far behind. Is there one that speaks the word in English? She either has to skip the word or ask and it's too often to ask, especially since the kids love to read in bed at night.
My son could benefit as well since he's younger. They both have a tablet and a eReader, but I'm open to buying them something else if there's something available. Most of our books are Kobo but we have some nook books, I have quite a few DRM free that I stripped years ago for myself so I would like to be able to use it on those too if possible, but not a deal breaker. I just don't really want to buy multiple versions if I don't have to. |

I have the Android ColorDict app from Google Play installed on my Samsung smartphone. You can download the 'English Dictionary Wordnet' from within it. This has a speak feature. See middle screenshot in this link.
Then you need to read your books using an app which supports ColorDict for its dictionary feature. There will be many, but I know that these epub reading apps do: PocketBook, Moon+, FBReader, Bookari |

I've used Amazon's Alexa by saying "How do you pronounce" and then spelling the word. It probably would also work with a guessed pronunciation though it might not get the right word. It sometimes misunderstands things I ask it. I often use it to define a word while reading because it just seems easier to just ask than to highlight. Anyway they are useful gadgets to have around. Similar devices from Google would work the same.
I have an early kindle with text to speech but the way it pronounces a lot of words is way off. English has a lot a strange quirks that way. Words that are spelled the same can have different meanings and pronunciations. |

I use the App Wordweb on Windows and their corresponding app in IOS. I use their pro version. They also have an Android version, but I know nothing about it.
A link to their site :https://wordweb.info/ I will also make a quote to an earlier response from me: Link Quote:

Thanks for all the tips! I downloaded some dictionaries one being the colordict app and the world dictionary. I got it to speak once then it disappeared. I bought the pro version of moon reader to try it out but haven't had a chance yet.
I thought of using Google and downloaded a few dictionaries but I turn their wifi off so that won't work all the time. |
