pdf conversion that preserves quality, paperwhite

Hi newbie here, I received my paperwhite today. I'd bookmarked this forum and the day has come. I managed to sneak few pdfs into kindle via USB. I was wondering if you could share with me your methods and workaround for certain problems.
1) pdf quality in paperwhite is agonizing, i converted them to epub and pages would either show low quality images or some random ascii texts for equations
2) I remember seeing a pdf splitter that splits one page into 2, maybe I could boost pdf quality by this way by skipping the entire conversion to mobi ordeal. I'm planning to convert files on pc, is there a suitable software or online tool that can help this?
3) Is there a sync server which is not linked to amazon, where you can upload files in server and sync it to kindle? Or is there a way to transfer files via WIFI from calibre to kindle? Or is there any other method that uses wifi to transfer files from pc to kindle?

PDFs, unless A5 format, need either paper, laptop or a Tablet. A small subset work on 300 dpi eink 6" models. The 7" models are a bit better.

Sometimes reconversion or cropping or colour depth or brightness/contrast helps using The Gimp (import to set DPI and export in reverse order as mng file) and ImageMagick (mng to pdf with crop and bit depth and brightness/contrast) or use K2pdfopt
