Windows 10 Search Problems
Hi all!
This is probably not a Calibre 5 problem, but I cannot find help anywhere else. Since I installed Calibre 5, any search on my computer nets folders only, no files. If I search for *.epub, I do not see any results. If I look directly in the folder the files are there. I am logged in as an administrator, have run Calibre and Explorer as the Administrator and seen the same results. I have reindexed the system several times. In my settings screen, I see that 400k files have been indexed with 1000k files pending. I let my computer sit, doing no work, overnight and these numbers do not change. I am an MCSE, feel free to give me simple or geeky advice. TIA Uncle Eric |

What do you get when you go to Settings => Update and Security => Troubleshooting => Additional Troubleshooters and run the Search and Indexing troubleshooter? This is pretty much the first step I'd suggest when search results are wonky.

I've had similar issues with the Windows Indexer before, as well as the damn thing trying to monopolize my CPU while rebuilding the index over and over and over. Shutting down the service and restarting it sometimes helped for a bit but I got annoyed enough with the damn thing to just disable it entirely. Check out Everything + SearchMyFiles.

Hey Guys!
Thanks for the input. 1. The Troubleshooter just restarts the search service 2. I am not having any cpu useage problems, it just is going very slowly. I downloaded UltraSearch, I use that for all my searches not, it works great. I just drag and drop files into Calibre as necessary. This just sounds like Windows weirdness, I was hoping I had just missed an obvious setting. Thanks to all. Uncle Eric |

File name searches on Windows such as *.epub or fred.* shouldn't need the Windows Indexer - and we should call them 'finds' rather than 'searches'. They use the file system index specified when the device was formatted - for NTFS that's the Master File Table (MFT), for FAT32 it's the File Allocation Table etc.
I suggest you start by disabling the Index service, an internet search for 'disable indexing windows 10' will show you how to do that. if filename finds are still failing then the file system index is probably corrupt, which may be repairable if it's an NTFS device. BR |
