Just to clarify and hopefully help, these results were obtained on an older Win7 laptop i use exclusively for my ebooks and vmware sessions. I have also tested using calibre portable with same kindle fire 10 on 2 other laptops totally up to date with Win10 and all latest patches and get the same results. Any help/assistance would be GREATLY appreciated.

Are you switching the Kindle Fire 10 to MTP mode after plugging it into your computer? If it follows the more or less generic instructions, after connecting swipe down from the top of the Fire's screen and look for the USB connection. If it says connected as media device, you should be able to see it on your computer. Otherwise, press on the Tap for other USB options and select Media Device (MTP).
