Can't export AZW3 to Kindle

Looks like Amazon doesn't want us to be able to send externally-formatted books to Kindle. .mobi works but with formatting issues when there are graphics. But the AZW3 just won't leave my folder, and I have tried bluetooth, drag and drop (no folders showing in my Kindle Fire connected to the laptop) an so on.

Any ideas?

What O/S and version and what version of calibre?

and have you made sure to connect as an mtp device and not the other? (I forget what the default connection is, but it doesn't allow transfer of files)

Yes. At each and every connection. It reverts to charging only at each connect.
But that for tablets, not for the e ink kindles.

True. However this thread is about Fire tablets, not Kindles.

ok - i kept reading "Kindle" in various posts.
anyway that's not what's wrong here because OP says he can move .mobi books OK.
IF the fire was connected as the default USB charging only, then no formats would copy

I suggest try moving a. azw3 using calibre companion instead of USB. The free demo version will do for a simple test. We can hypothesis more given the outcome of that test.

The use of the word "send" led me to think the op was able to "send" mobi files OTA, but AZW3 won't send using that method, so the op was trying drag & drop, which is done via USB. Hence the need to enable data transfer on the Fire.

Thanks for all the thoughtful replies. I don't understand most of the abbreviations some of the responders are using, MTP, PW and so on, but basically I don't have a Kindle Fire. It's a standard Kindle, version 9.

I have been using the send to Kindle app, but that doesn't work and I can't send directly from Calibre either.

OK. A clearer initial statement would have shortened this thread by a week!

You can ignore all the previous posts from #4 , as they all refer to Fire tablets

"send to kindle" works for a restricted list of formats only, Amazon clearly state that AZW is NOT one of them.

calibre -> Kinlde via USB sends all of all variants of .MOBI, AZW.

You can send anything from calibre via USB, if correctly configured, but due to Amazon's definition of a book ( it's a book IFF amazon sold it to you), some transfers may appear on the kindle as personal documents.

A common mistake is to stare at the list of kindle "books - show all" list and complain that stuff is missing - because its filed under documents, not books.

That does not make a lot of sense. There is no "version 9" Kindle. If you mean 9th generation the only Kindle that fits that description is the second Oasis model. Is that what you have?

Basically, if you have a color LCD screen it's a Fire. If it is monochrome E-Ink screen it's a Kindle.

(Also your profile shows "Device: Kindle Fire 9th gen".)

You said you were using a Kindle Fire in your first post. If the screen on your device is color, you have a Fire tablet, if it's greyscale, you have a Kindle. They are two different type of devices.

"Send to Kindle" will not send AZW3 file, it only works with MOBI files. Books sent to your Kindle will appear in the DOCS sections, so you must change the Sort options on your Kindle at the top using the menus.

Tap FILTER>>DOCS

This applies to a Kindle, not a Fire.

Post some details. Which device do you have? Has Send to Kindle worked in the past?

so whatever device the OP actually has, it will not work and can never have worked for that format.
