Onyx BOOX Note S 9.7 stylus not working anymore
Hello. My Onyx Boox Note S 9.7 screen doesn't recognize the stylus anymore, I can only use it with finger touch. I don't know if it is a coincidence, but this happened only a few weeks after I updated the firmware to the latest version (Build number: 2020-07-24_06-35_2.3.1_ddc8bd5)
At first I thought the stylus might be broken, but I noticed that when I open a note using the default application, if I put my palm on the writing area or if I touch it with my fingers, the application stops responding and I have to close it and reopen it. I performed hard resets several times, but this didn't solve the issue. This makes me believe the electromagnetic screen layer might be defective, or maybe this is related to the firmware upgrade. I always used a leather cover to protect the tablet and a matte screen protector, I never dropped it or spilled liquids on it, it just broke by itself. This is very annoying, because I use my Boox primarily for writing notes on it. I made a video to demonstrate the issue: I used the feedback form to contact Boox Customer Service, they asked me to check the Capacitive Touch Version in Settings, which is EL-0x5521. Apparently, other Boox Note users had problems with firmware updates, resulting in deleting the Capacitive Touch Version (http://bbs.onyx-international.com/t/...working/1852/3). The technician said that in my case, most probably the screen is defective, but they don't produce spare screens anymore (old Hanvon Technology), so they cannot help me. Could this be a stylus problem? The cheapest stylus replacement I could find is 50 USD on Aliexpress, but I don't want to risk buying it only to find out that the screen or firmware are faulty, not the stylus. I'd prefer to try another stylus, or try mine on another Hanvon screen (Onyx Boox Max 13.3 or N96, I think M92 and M96 also use that screen). I tried finding someone in Romania to send my stylus to in order to check it, but I couldn't find anyone. Maybe somebody in Europe is willing to help me? What other options do I have? Can I downgrade it to the previous version? On Onyx Boox website I can only find the latest firmware to download. |

UPDATE: I was able to find a previous firmware version (2.2.2 / December 2019) using webarchive: http://web.archive.org/web/202006091...s/#note-series
I downloaded it, copied it over USB in my Note root directory, installed it using the Firmware Update section in Settings. The downgrade succeeded, this firmware version is much faster than the latest one, but the stylus still doesn't work, so I guess the next step would be to try another compatible stylus, then to disassemble the Note and check the screen model and connectors, maybe I can find a compatible one to buy at an affordable price. Will a N96 fit? |
