Apks of Android 4.0 apps for Max

I have obtained a used Max from a well known auction site, to try out its huge screen for stuff like annotating PDFs, etc. Having done my research I'm well aware of the shortcomings of this device compared to more up to date iterations. I quite like tinkering with technology that is not the latest and greatest, as long as it works...

One issue I face is that Android 4.0.4 is no longer supported by Google, so Google Play, Google Play services, etc. will not function. Given that, I need to find sources to download old apk files of apps to install on the Max. Many of the apk sites have very few, if any apps for this old version of Android. Most apps set the minimum requirement as 4.1 Jellybean.

So my questions:

- Those who have been on the Onyx Boox platform for a while, do you have any recommendations of apps that work well on an older device like the Max?
- Can you suggest apk repository sites that may host older versions of Android apps compatible with 4.0.4?
- Is there a source for older proprietary Onyx Boox apps?
- Finally, if anyone has owned or used the original Max (Mobius, not the Max Carta), how did you find the experience?

Thanks for your attention if you read this far. Any responses gratefully received.

I haven't used my original Max in quite some time as I prefer my Note Pro for its light and dual touch capabilities. My wife uses the Max now to read manga and she quite enjoys it for that.

When I did use it, the main apps I used were: FX File Explorer, Moon + Reader, ColorDict and several Chinese and Japanese dictionary apps. I also had an old version of Kingsoft which I sometimes used.

To find older versions of apps, APKPure can be a useful site: https://apkpure.com/app

Thank you, that's most helpful. I managed to track down suitable apks for all the apps you mentioned, either through APKPure or APKMirror.

I have been reading some of the historical discussion threads here on related topics from three years ago.

They provide plenty of tips as to which apps work, even some version numbers, and so on. I discovered APKHere from those threads which is a fantastic repository for older versions of apps. I'm encouraged to try out my bluetooth keyboard with some word processors. Also a long thread on using the Max as a VNC client which I don't think I'll attempt...

Thanks all for your prior efforts and discussions around the Max/Max Carta!

Still open to hearing views or reflections on the user experience of this device with the benefit of several years' hindsight...

The Max arrived today and I have tested it with a few ePubs, a Word doc, PDFs, and some comics files: a cbz and cbr. Also tested Notes and scribbling on a PDF.

Have to say considering this is an earlier iteration of the device, running relatively outdated firmware, it works really well. Almost everything worked flawlessly, except for the cbr file which for some reason opened several pages into the story. It was a rather large file so maybe that's why, or perhaps cbr not fully supported in NeoReader 2. Anyway that was the only glitch in an otherwise great reading and annotating experience.

I've downloaded some apks but will carefully consider which I really need, as the stock Onyx software works pretty well.
