Ambidextrous readers, which page-turn layout do you use?
I've been trying different region layouts. I first tried the layout with the page forward being wide and left, and menu being a small square in the center (second option), but I kept getting the menu when I wanted to turn pages,a nd still had to reach too far over when using my left hand -- further than I had to on my Kindle. Now I'm playing with the fourth option with the entire bottom 40% or so being forward, but then it feels like when holding it right-handed I have to hold it lower than I normally would.
I'd love to have a layout like I saw on the Pocketbooks where there was a forward and back on both sides.... |

I use the pageturn buttons on my Forma? (Which, granted, isn't an ambidextrous design, but it works really well nonetheless).
Ooops. ![]() |

I wish that Kobo had something similar because it would allow me to hold it further up the device and still have easy access on either side -- I also have big hands, so having to touch in the bottom 40% isn't always easy. The right-most is what I'm currently using, but, like I said, feels a bit cramped. |

I often change hands and I use the 3rd option and the buttons (I always rotate as I change hands). It has the advantage when using the right hand to go forward with the bottom button, and back with a tap on the screen. When using the left hand I use mostly the buttons for forward, occasionally a tap on the screen, and a swipe for backward.

I use the first layout and dominantly my right hand. If I use the left hand, I swipe to turn pages. Swipe works in both directions on both sides.
I updated my reader recently and looked through the patches for that. There is a patch to make both page turn tap areas to go forward. At least it says that in the description. If swipe to go back would still work, I don't know, but it may be worth a try. |

@twowheels,
I don't know whether you decided to try kobopatch, or not, but if so there is a patch in there (called 'Both page turn sides go next') which allows you to set both tap zones to 'go forward'. Then when you do want to 'go back' you would need to swipe rather than tap. I suppose it may take a little time to get used to it, but it's another option to consider. Full disclosure - I don't actually use this particular patch myself. Last edited by jackie_w; 06-03-2020 at 04:16 AM. |

Thanks @Jackie_w... I’ve been avoiding the patches for now, but will keep that in mind.

I'm right-handed but I most often hold my readers in my left hand. I have my Clara set to swipe only to help avoid unintended page turns. I use my thumb for swiping. I typically hold the reader approximately like a mirror image of this
https://www.twenty20.com/photos/7d44...5-7bd7551d4942 I used to hold my Sonys with my right hand, but my preferred right-handed hold required the page turn buttons so I can't hold my Clara that way. |

I use the default layout on my H2O. I have it set to only turn pages with a swipe. I use my thumb to turn the page. Most of the time I hold it with my right hand. But I can use my left hand and still swipe with my thumb. I have no need for buttons.

I am not ambidextrous but i have terrible RSI so I constantly switch the page turn hand to whichever is least achy. i don't use the Kobo buttons, they need more force ( and from a different angle) to a very light just touch the screen page tap.
so I go with kobo option 4 ( either side of bottom of screen = next page). and i usually rest the reader on my lap, I don't actually hold it up in the air. Critics should be grateful that there are 4 options, Kindle has only 1 ( the default) which is probably rubbish for lefties |
