Mod to have backlight 100% off?
Hi,
I know we can just turn Brightness to 0% in the options, but is there a physical hack or firmware or config file mod to turn the backlight off? Thanks! |

Solved!
![]() @JSWolf: I admit I'm sometimes monomaniacal on small issues, but I bought an ereader for one reason: to not have a back- or front-lighted device, but something more like a book (there are enough lighted devices at home: TV, computer, phone, iPad!). Setting brightness to 0% was not satisfactory because family would aways put it on again, etc. For me this is a good example of: less is more. Anyway problem solved ![]() Last edited by zrn; 05-10-2020 at 04:54 AM. |

You do realise that holding an eink ereader with its own frontlight disabled while sitting in a lit room means it is STILL frontlit, right?

I don't want to have to turn brightness to 0% every now and then because an accidental slide on the device has put it on again.
Also it's a personal choice for me to not have my kids read in a 100% dark bedroom with their face only lit by LEDs. No matter if it's a blue LED, orange/yellow LED with a better light spectrum or AmbiantClearGoodSomething LED®. A bedroom reading lamp makes a more diffuse and balanced lighting in the room, than an ereader which creates an discontinuous lightning: ereader 100% lighted, walls 0% lighted. I completely respect your opinion @JSWolf, but I don't want this for my children: Last edited by issybird; 05-10-2020 at 01:58 PM. Reason: Oversized image thumbnailed. |

Your image is of a backlit device, frontlit ereaders look nothing like that. You're absolutely entitled to make whatever choices you wish, but do try to grok the facts involved.

@UncleRobin: he was exactly in this situation ... yesterday evening, so I can confirm it looked like that: the frontlight reflects on the human face, and finally when you enter the room, what you see, as a parent, is exactly what is described on this photo: a dark room and a white face lighted by LEDs (coming from front or back of the ereader does not change anything to this).
(Please do the experiment this night with someone else in a dark room, you will see it's like this). The fact the light comes from back or front of the ereader doesn't change the fact that, if there's no other light in the room, it creates a discontinuous and totally unbalanced/unsmooth lighting in the room, which I don't want, as a parent. The fact the light comes from back or front of the ereader also does not change anything to the fact it becomes a LED-light-emitting device. I totally understand other people have different opinions/choices about this. Last edited by zrn; 05-10-2020 at 01:21 PM. |

I know for a fact it looks nothing like the image you posted, because my wife reads in bed almost every night with her Kobo Aura H2O2, and so several times a week I see what a frontlit reader in a dark room looks like. Your choice to remain ignorant of the realities is your choice, but your stubbornly insisting "they're the same" remains utterly wrong.

> How is the front light any worse then the flashlight I used to use when I was supposed to be asleep?
This is primarily opinion-based so it could be an endless debate, but for me, both are bad. Nothing replaces the smooth diffused light created by a bedside lamp with a lampshade when you want to read at night. If the only light in the room comes from a 200 cm² LED-lighted device it creates a discontinuous lighting: the device is lighted and nothing else in the room. I find it worse than the light created by a diffused light. Endless debate anyway. |

@UncleRobin I generally stop debating when it comes to ad hominem argumentum or when it starts like: "stubbornly insisting", "remain ignorant".
End of the debate for me. Have a good day though. PS: If you're interested about the topic, I recommend you to speak with a photographer or anyone who uses lighting professionally, and speak about the concept of diffused / smooth lighting. TL;DR: a 0.02 m² LED-lighted device doesn't create a balanced smooth light in a room. Last edited by zrn; 05-10-2020 at 01:34 PM. |

There were no ad hominem slurs in my post. You said "do the experiment..., you will see it's like this". I know from nearly 2 years of "doing the experiment" that statement is simply wrong. My posts were in reply to your persistent conflation of backlit and frontlit devices, and your insistence that there is no difference between their function and appearance in dark environments. I stand by my careful choice of words.
