Troubleshooting Disappearing books but not lost

I downloaded some time ago several mobi files to my wife's paperwhite. They were put into the documents folder.

Now normally when I do this they immediately appear in her current list of books.

Yesterday she asked why I had not put on a book she requested. I said I had but she insisted it was not listed and she had been through every book.

So I searched (using search) and there it was. I opened it and it worked fine.

Here is the strange bit - She then hit Home and the book was not there even though it was open. I scrolled through all her books - not there - gone.

However, used search and there it was. Once again opened it and was able to read but go to the home page and the book again disappears.

I then tried rebooting but exactly the same.

We have both had Kindles since they came out but not experience anything like this.

Any help/explanations gratefully received.

Have you used Calibre to change the title of the book? To add serial information, for instance? About 3-5 years ago, I had books already pulled from Amazon through the cloud. (Bought from Amazon, as I recall.) Changing the title and putting them back on the Voyage, caused both versions to disappear. I could search for them but never see them.

Numerous iterations of delete book with old title, mount kindle on desktop, copy over new title, dismount, open kindle finally got an instance where I was fast enough: I SAW the titles appear and then quickly disappear as the kindle noticed there were two title-versions.

I gave up on changing titles. I know others change titles happily; I've not been willing to risk this pain again.

Yes I have changed the title through Calibre.
I have a range of Jack Reacher books by Lee Child. I like to label them Reacher 1 - xxxx
then Reacher 2 - yyyy, Reacher 3 zzzz and so on. It stops us reading those books out of order.
I'll try completely removing and putting back on. See what happens.

I found that if you transfer the book to a kindle with either a sub-folder or filename that contains a period (full stop), it does not appear. I'd connect the kindle to a computer and browse the documents folder for filename anomalies.
